Domestic armored car "Scorpion" in service appeared not so long ago. The car is produced in three modifications: in the form of an armored model, a tilt car for special forces and a conventional unprotected version. All versions have been accepted for use by the Russian Ministry of Defense, which plans to expand the lineup to include command and staff, medical, communications and other special configurations.
Development and creation
The new armored car was developed by Zashchita, a private company known for its undertakings in the creation of special vehicles, body armor, handcuffs and other specific means. Prototypes were produced entirely at the expense of the company's financial investments. After passing the tests, they were submitted to the Ministry of War for approval and testing.
Many foreign organizations involved in the manufacture of military equipment work according to this principle. The new armored car "Scorpion" is equipped with many components and assemblies of imported production, due to the lack of high-quality similar domestic parts.
The army made the first order for 60 vehicles. Their production is established at the plant in Fryazino. It is also expected to release a civilian modification of a military armored car. Next, consider the technical parameters and differences between the already developed models.
Armored car "Scorpion LSHA B": description
This modification is the heaviest variation of the car in question. The protection class of the armored car is the fifth (allows you to withstand a bullet from an AKM, a rifle). The model differs from a conventional car in an armored body in the form of a capsule and a V-shaped bottom, which allows you to disperse the blast wave when it hits a landmine.
As shown by tests, the Scorpion armored car can withstand a charge equivalent to two kilograms of TNT. Twice as large a dose of explosives leads to the destruction of the main elements of the machine, while the people inside suffer minimally. This feature is associated with a solid mass of equipment, which is more than four thousand kilograms.
Powertrain
The LSHA B model is equipped with a four-cylinder turbine diesel engine manufactured by the Polish company Andoria. Its working volume is 2.7 liters with a power of 156 horsepower. The manufacturers of the armored car report that in the case of permanent orders for this car, the Polish side agrees to establish the production of engines in the territory of the Russian Federation.
While reducers, gearboxes, transmission units are made in Korea. The wheels of an army car are shod in importedoff-road tires with special inserts. These nodes are also planned to be assembled on the territory of the Russian Federation. The batteries of the armored car are similar to the tank elements of the new model. The gearbox here has five steps, and the transfer unit has a lower row and the possibility of hard connection of the front drive.
The armored car "Scorpion" is equipped with independent suspension, ABS system, disc brakes. A large number of imported parts were used to give the car reliability, dynamism and cross-country ability, since domestic counterparts are still lagging behind in some positions.
Equipment & Interior
Four to six seats for personnel are mounted inside the vehicle. Their fastening is made not to the floor, but to the sides, which allows to increase the degree of protection from the explosion. In the middle part of the compartment there is a place for a machine gunner and ammunition. Armored car "Scorpion 2MB" with a combat module is equipped with a machine gun "Kord" or "KPVT", which is mounted on the roof.
The equipment in question may seem simple, even spartan. However, the armored car is thought out to the smallest detail. At the same time, there are an order of magnitude more controllers and controls in it than in a conventional car. There are two hatches on the roof. The round shield on the front is designed to mount a machine gun, the square back cover is an emergency exit for landing troops.
Light version
"Scorpion LTA" - an armored car that has less weight and protection thanmodification discussed above. It is also known under the index 2M. As standard, it is equipped with a canvas top, mounted on a massive roll cage. There are interpretations of the car with an all-metal body. The bottom here is flat, not protected from explosions.
The driver's seat is almost identical to the armored car, apart from simpler climate control and ventilation. The personnel compartment is also simplified in this version. The role of the seats is performed by benches that are attached to the floor and placed along the sides.
The 156-horsepower diesel unit, which is optimal for a four-ton truck, is too active on the light version. This is due to the fact that the "Scorpion" is an armored car (LPA or LTA), which is almost one and a half tons lighter than its colleague of the LSHA series. With such an engine, the car does not leave the ravines, but practically jumps out.
Main parameters
The following are the overall and technical indicators of the two modifications of the armored car in question.
Variation 2M:
- length/width/height - 4, 85/2, 13/2, 15 meters;
- body type - three-door version with awning;
- curb/full weight – 2.5/3.5 tons;
- wheelbase - three and a half meters;
- maximum travel angle is 45 degrees;
- maximum slope - 21°;
- fording one meter;
- clearance - thirty centimeters;
- power plant - R4 turbodiesel;
- working volume - 2 6336 cu. see;
- power to the maximum - 156 horsepower at 3,600 rpm;
- knottransmissions - five-speed mechanics;
- drive - full plug-in variant with reduction gear;
- the maximum speed is 130 kilometers per hour.
Scorpion - an armored car (LSHA), the characteristics of which are described above, has a large curb weight (4.1 tons). Other distinguishing parameters:
- length/width/height - 4, 61/2, 1/2, 16 meters;
- gross weight – 4.9 tons;
- body type - armored version (class 5 or 6A);
- top speed is 120 kilometers per hour.
Other technical indicators between the cars in question are identical.
Control and maneuverability
"Scorpion" - an armored car (LSHA 2B), the photo of which is presented below, is really convenient and pleasant to drive. Behind the wheel of such an SUV, there is a reckless sense of permissiveness when overcoming most obstacles.
Nevertheless, there are some pitfalls here. For example, a heavy car buried in loose snow is not so easy to pull out as it might seem at first glance. A winch can help, which is hooked to a suitable stop or to the same armored car. The car in question has two locking devices on the hood that are removed and adjusted to fit the wheels.
According to some reports, this decision was prompted by the military themselves, who experienced all the delights of testing an armored car in the most difficult conditions. The maximum autonomy of each transport unit objectively allowssolve most of the tasks. In addition, the developers intend to create a modification designed to work effectively in regions with extremely low temperatures. Regarding the cons of the armored car, it can be noted: some designers are sure that a continuous rear axle would add strength, and drum-type brakes proved to be better in muddy areas than a disc block.
Armored car "Scorpion": tests
The three variations of the car in question differ in weight and protection. The armored to the maximum version was tested on bench fire from an SVD sniper rifle. The distance to the target is 30 meters. Given the initial flight speed of the released charge - more than 800 meters per second, we can say that the armored car passed the test with dignity.
It is noteworthy that more than one and a half hundred shots were fired at the car during the tests, not only at the armor, but also at the joints, glass, handles and other elements. As a result - not a single through hole. During testing under an armored car, 600 grams of explosives were blown up, capable of blowing up any truck. The vehicles withstood the impact thanks to the armored V-shaped bottom.
Safety
Armored car "Scorpion LSHA" has a number of additional features that increase the safety of the crew. These include:
- Armored car design with a special bottom contour.
- Mounting seats for landing crew, which is fixed on the side walls.
- High cross-country ability andclimbing steep hills without tipping over.
- Superiority of similar models in terms of speed, maneuverability, overcoming high mountain areas.
- Excellent weaponry for its class along with the most thoughtful protection.
In the competitive test between the "Scorpion" and the famous "Hammer", the domestic car outplayed its rival in most parameters (armament, safety, off-road speed and interior capacity).
Conclusion
From the review, we can conclude that the "Scorpion" - an armored car, the photo of which is presented above, is an innovative development in the category of domestic light armored cars. Its functionality allows you to parachute a mobile military group on any road. At the same time, the brigade is protected not only from small arms, but also from mines laid on the road surface.
All characteristics testify to the reliability, maneuverability of the car. No wonder the Ministry of Defense plans to increase the order of the supplied vehicles. Some of them will serve as communications, medical and other vehicles not directly related to combat activities.
