This is the first in a series of upcoming articles on building race cars. In this article, a little about the division into classes and what to think about when choosing the make and model to build your race car.
There is a small remark at the beginning of the story. In this series of articles, I will describe the conversion of a production car into a racing car. That is, the case, I must say more earthly and less expensive, when the construction takes place on the basis of a mass-produced car.
I will deliberately not consider formulas and sports prototypes with space frames, these are already "spaceships" and engineering masterpieces that can be described forever.
First of all, a couple of words for those who read not just out of curiosity, but in order to find out something for themselves and decide how to do races.
Building a car is longer and more expensive than buying a finished one. And it probably makes sense only if we need to build a champion car on which we want to win in the class and there is no other way how to build at our own expense. In all other cases, it is advisable to buy ready-made or rent.
Let's start from the very beginning. To start building a car, you need to choose the type of motor sport in which we will compete, which car we will build and in what class. Let's imagine that there is enough budget and opportunities for any kind of competition at a not very high Russian level.
I will mention some of the most popular forms of motorsport in our country:
RSKG is probably the most promoted championship to this day. The main thing is the TV! Although in the beginning season, the organizers added problems to the participants with new perturbations of the classes.
Each of these disciplines has a division into classes. And also there are different regional and all-Russian series. Let's say we have chosen rally as our kind of racing.
Among the all-Russian competitions in the rally there is the Cup of Russia and the Championship of Russia. The difference between them is in the length of the track, the duration of the stage, the number of stages and the principle of scoring. The championship is more prestigious and the title of Champion is at stake.
Classes of the Russian Cup and what cars are found in the class.
1400N (national) drive on one axle
This includes machines made on the territory of our country with a volume of no more than 1.6 liters and corresponding to special technical requirements for the national class.
I must say that the viburnum NFR gets there, just a viburnum (now a grant) and there is no one else to compete with these machines. And it makes no sense. Kalina is fast and it is impossible to catch up with her to anyone who falls into this class.
national cars from VAZ came out very fast
The power of cars in this class is up to 160-170 l / s
The budget for the purchase of such a new TOP-level car is about 1.5-2 million rubles
Rent for a race with full service and turnkey wheels 250,000 rubles
When I was recently collecting a TRAINING KALINA, I talked with rally drivers who drove and drive Kalina in order to understand the scope of improvements for my tasks. And my machine turned out to be excellent.
1600H drive on one axle
Cars with engine displacement up to 1.6 (if the car has a sequential gearbox or more than 2 throttle valves or the suspension kinematics is changed, then it goes to the next class)
A small remark: Hereinafter, the engine displacement is written "reduced". The fact is that if the car has supercharging, then in order to get the reduced engine volume, you need to multiply the working volume by a factor of 1.7.
Example: 1.6 turbo car. The given volume will be 1.6 * 1.7 = 2.75
What brands and models of cars are found in this class:
- All front-wheel drive VAZs (including viburnum with more serious preparation than in the national one)
- VAZ classic (2101-2107) with turbo supercharging up to 1.6 8v. (from this season such an admission has been obtained, while one car exists and participates, but I think in the future there will be quite a few of them)
- Citroen Saxo (cars are much more than 10 years old and there are not many of them left)
- Volkswagen Polo
- Honda Civic (also ancient over 10 years old)
- Ford Fiesta
Zavodskaya kalina lada-rosneft won both championships and cups on it
The power of cars in this class is obtained, usually up to 190 l / s
Newly built cars are not particularly sold, the construction of TOP viburnum / grants in this class will cost about 3 million. rub. Fiesta will be more expensive.
2000H drive on one axle
Cars with engine displacement up to 2.0 (if the car has a sequential gearbox or more than 2 throttle valves or the suspension kinematics is changed, then it goes to the next class)
What makes and models of cars are found in this class:
- Ford fiesta (I have just SUCH MACHINE, in the photo. There are also more recent bodies)
- Honda Civic (one of the most powerful always, regardless of the body)
- cars of the international group R2 are also allowed in this class (1.6 - 200sil + there is a 0.9 turbo option for the fiesta), the most expensive and very fast (Peugeot 208, Ford Fiesta, Opel Adam + old Citroen C2)
- BMW - only a couple of cars (very ancient)
- Renault Clio just a couple of cars (ancient)
The power of cars in this class is up to 250 l / s for the most powerful Hondas
4000N all-wheel drive, turbo
- Subaru Impreza STI
- Mitsubishi Lancer EVO
And there is no one else and hardly will be. New machines are not built, so they gradually die out.
Mitsu, slightly faster due to more powerful engines after tuning. The power of their engines reaches 340 l / s at 720 N / m of torque. Within the technical limits of the class. The main one of which radically affects the characteristics is a restrictor. In simple terms, a restrictor is a detail that limits the maximum diameter of the inlet to the throttle valve at 4000N - 34mm.
Now let's consider the Championship of Russia
R2 - cars of the international training group R2 and also cars from the cup according to the requirements of the 1600H class are allowed here.
International R2 is front-wheel drive, sequential 5st gearbox, engine up to 200 l / s, excellent chassis, cars are assembled from kits produced by the manufacturer.
The price for the top version of such a car in Europe is 55-60 thousand euros. (4.3 million rubles)
R3 - cars of the international training group R3 and also cars from the cup according to the requirements of the 2000H class are allowed here.I
must say that there are almost no R3 cars (2.0 250 l / s, front-wheel drive sequential gearbox, modified suspension kinematics with long travels) in our country, and in the world a dying class. Therefore, in the championship, mainly cup cars drive in the R3 classification and, in principle, the class is not very full.
- Subaru Impreza STI
- Mitsubishi Lancer EVO
The only difference is that the 33mm restrictor seems to be a millimeter difference, but it affects the engine performance.
Absolut (all previous classes compete here + the most powerful, interesting thing that does not go anywhere else. 102nd racing gasoline is allowed, in all classes before this monofuel 100 racing gasoline)
- Subaru and Evo with a 36mm restrictor, Power reaches 400l / s with a torque of 750 n / m.
This is a new trend in the rally, and many believe that they are the future. Proto is when units from an Evo or Subaru with a 34mm restrictor are inserted into the body of a small car, for example, a Ford Fiesta, and an R5 level suspension with a sequential gearbox is added to this, with a car weight of only 1250kg.
The price of a new such car is about 130 thousand euros (10 million rubles)
- Cars of the international group R5 The
international group R5 is the class in which they play in the European championship and the second class in speed in the world championship (WRC2).
1.6t engine, machine power about 300hp, sequential gearbox, super suspension with long strokes and kinematics different from conventional cars, light weight 1200kg and of course all-wheel drive.
under the hood R5
True, there are little familiar details in the photo?!
The price of a new such car in Europe is about 200 thousand euros (15 million rubles)
Let's go back to the choice - and so what factors should be considered when choosing the brand and model of your future racing car.
1. Availability of ready-made technical solutions for sports, for example, factory support. Peugeot-sport, Ford m-sport and similar divisions have developments and ready-made proven solutions for sale. Often there are options with budget copies of the originals in our market. (Building a car and being a pioneer, developing all these solutions at your own expense is a terribly expensive and long way)
2. The presence of the current production of the model, freshness, the number of cars on the market (if the car has long been discontinued, then at least it will not be possible to find a fresh suitable donor )
3. The speed of finished copies of a racing car (if you want to build a car from a model that has never even entered the top three of your chosen class, then you should think twice)
4. Availability and cost of spare parts, both sports and civil.
I tried to write in a language that is understandable, simple for everyone, but if you have any questions, ask in the comments.
In the following parts, we will look at preparing the car in the following aspects.
2. Engine and fuel system
5. Brake system
6. Electrics and interior.
