Today we are going to talk about a truly innovative car created by Volvo. We will certainly talk about the new V60 PLUG-IN-HYBRID. In general, this modification belongs to the PHEV group of vehicles, which stands for Plug in Hybrid Electric Vehicle. Volvo is pioneering by combining electric traction with a diesel powertrain.

This class differs from conventional hybrid vehicles by the ability to recharge from the mains supply and the ability to drive on electric traction. This type of car is widespread in Europe and is represented on the market by manufacturers such as BMW, Mitsubishi and General Motors. It is not surprising that Volvo chose the station wagon body, the most popular in the "Old World", for the implementation of its first PLUG-IN-HYBRID, where in many countries the words "economy" and "ecology" are no longer an empty phrase. For Russia, this class (PHEV) of cars is still a wonder, for most the most surprising part of this car is the "fuel tank" located in the front left fender, although, of course, this is the charging connector cover.

So what we have here: the 215 hp D5 five-cylinder diesel engine, well known to us from the XC60 and XC70 models (since the 2015 model year, it is also available for the S80), which is responsible for rotating the front axle and a pair of electric motors mounted on the rear wheels, issuing a total of 68 additional horses.

It is important that the car has an all-wheel drive function: when you press a button on the control panel in the passenger compartment, the electronics synchronizes the operation of the diesel engine and a pair of electric motors to create simultaneous rotation of all four wheels. Thus, it was possible to abandon unnecessary elements such as an angular transmission, propeller shaft, all-wheel drive clutch and rear axle. The D6 and AWD emblems flaunt on the trunk lid.

Instead of the usual control buttons for the active suspension FOUR-C in the PLUG-IN-HYBRID, this place contains the driving mode control buttons, there are three of them:

1. PURE - solely traction of an electric motor. The power reserve with a full battery charge exceeds 50 km. Don't lie. I managed to drive 48 km before the message appeared about the necessary inclusion of the diesel engine. At first glance, the figure of 50 km does not seem significant, on the other hand, my path from home to work is 19 km, which guarantees (with a charger at home and at work, of course) driving without refueling in principle. Interestingly, traffic jams are not a significant obstacle for this driving mode. According to the computer, the main battery consumption of the hybrid propulsion system is driving. By the way, my experience fell on a rather cool period of time: the temperature overboard reached minus 7 degrees. There is a SAVE button on the control panel, which allows you to keep the range in PURE mode at 20 km.This is useful when you know you will need clean energy riding at the end of your trip.

The ride itself is simply mesmerizing at first: 68 horsepower of electric origin is not at all the same as gasoline or diesel. The direct drive provides perfect kickback - the accelerator pedal is precise, acceleration looks fast and very soft. You can comfortably reach a working speed of 60-80 km / h faster than the absolute majority of the flow, while not spending a penny from your wallet. If earlier, according to my feelings, I liked turbocharged gasoline units the most, then after this test I became an absolute fan of electric traction =)

2. HYBRID - standard mode. The computer independently organizes the balanced use of the diesel engine and electric motors. The declared fuel consumption is 1.8 liters per 100 km, and the amount of CO2 produced does not exceed 48 grams / km. I did not measure the environmental indicators, but the real fuel consumption is slightly higher and in dense Moscow flows amounted to 2.2 liters. Yes, this is more than stated, but still incredibly small. While driving at a speed of 110 km / h on the Moscow Ring Road, the instantaneous consumption ranged from 0.4 to 0.8 liters per 100 km! In fairness, it should be noted that when the battery is completely discharged, the PLUG-IN-HYBRID turns into essentially a regular front-wheel drive V60 D5. Consumption in this case will be in the region of 5-5.5 liters, although this is a very decent indicator.

3. POWER - maximum power mode, providing dynamic acceleration due to the simultaneous use of the thrust of all engines. The cumulative performance in this case is 283 hp, and the maximum torque exceeds 600 Newton meters. In this mode, the car reaches 100 km / h in 6.1 seconds - an impressive figure. Driving in POWER mode can bring fuel consumption to almost 9 liters, however, the car behaves really cool: due to the mass of the battery located in the rear, it was possible to achieve ideal weight distribution, thanks to which a station wagon weighing more than 2 tons copes well with turns. The exchange rate stabilization system works better than usual, playing with the distribution of effort - it is almost impossible to drive into a skid, and the pleasant oversteer is unexpected and, of course, pleasant.

By default, the car always starts in HYBRID mode without starting the diesel engine. The start of movement in normal mode occurs with the use of clean energy, only in the mode of sharp acceleration ("gas to the floor") the diesel engine starts its work immediately after starting from a standstill.

During the five-day test drive (Monday through Friday), I traveled over 600 km in the car, using just over half of the 40 liter tank, using different driving modes. I am sure that with long-term use and optimization of driving style, fantastic performance can be achieved.

Of course, in addition to its technological origin, the car is equipped with the maximum, according to Volvo standards, trim levels, which includes the Volvo on call system, adaptive cruise control, and much, much more, which you all, of course, have an idea of. Note that instead of the usual pre-heater and setting timers, the car has a PREPARATION menu, in which the time is also set. By the specified time, the car interior will not only warm up in winter, but also cool down in summer. This feature is implemented using the energy from the hybrid powertrain battery. Of course, this function can be operated from your phone using the Volvo on Call app.

Many people compare this model to the American Tesla. In my opinion, this is not entirely fair. Firstly, Tesla is not officially supplied to the Russian Federation, which means that the owner will not receive normal service (meaning the guarantee, locksmith service, insurance and body repair). Secondly, the V60, unlike Tesla, is a much more versatile car due to the possibility of operating a diesel engine, because in our country there are more mileage, and there are practically no charging stations. By the way, about charging stations. As it turned out, at least 9 free stations are constantly operating in Moscow. In order to use them, you need to register and receive a special card from Moscow Cable Networks completely free of charge. Some stations are located in the center and allow you to park for free. Besides,Moscow authorities promise in the near future additional preferences for owners of electric vehicles and hybrids of the PHEV class, for example, free parking even within the boulevard ring. Of course, you can charge the car not only from special stations, but also from a regular household network. All that is needed is a ground connection. Before starting charging, the smart car diagnoses the network and, if something is wrong, the red indicator on the charger lights up. Therefore, if you decide to use an extension cord or find it difficult to identify a grounded outlet, it's okay, the car will not make a mistake. Depending on the amperage, it will take from two to seven hours from zero to full charge. At the same time, the estimated charging end time lights up on the car dashboard.

After reading all of the above, you might think that this model will soon make up at least a quarter of the traffic flow. However, in reality this is not at all the case. To date, there are only six such cars in Russia, and three of them have not left the dealerships, and one is at the disposal of the Volvo representative office in Russia. The reason is simple: according to the configurator on the Volvo Cars website, the price of a car starts at 3.9 million rubles (although immediately in the Summum configuration). Agree, for this money it is morally difficult to buy even such, but still "just" a medium-sized wagon. It is also important that no one in life will guess the price of your station wagon, because in addition to the charging connector cover in the front left fender, this car externally differs from the usual modification only by the presence of specific nameplates. The usual V60 D5 is not supplied to Russia, but suppose that is not the case, then its cost would be about 2.2 million rubles, against 3.9 million for the PHEV version. The fuel consumption of the conventional version would be around 7 liters versus 2 liters for the "hybrid" (let's discard the theoretical possibility of driving only on electric traction). It turns out to save almost 2 rubles per kilometer. However, in all honesty, after the test I really wanted to keep this car myself. Dynamic, economical, safe, roomy: not too big and at the same time not too small, a truly comfortable wagon. Yes, he does not shout about his exclusivity and looks like an ordinary car, but, you must admit, this has its own charm. Only true car lovers, looking at the V60 PLUG-IN-HYBRID, understand what is in front of them.
