We have been waiting for the new GLS for a very long time: so much has happened in 13 years! BMW, for example, recently released the X7, which turned out to be very good. But the problem was that we were comparing it with an already very old Mercedes - but now the game was on an equal footing. We went to the States to test the new GLS, carefully studied all of its most interesting features (we even drove it!) And are ready to tell why we liked it more than BMW.
Comparisons with the X7 cannot be avoided, there are too many similarities in these machines - they were even built almost in the same way. If the Bavarians took and stretched the X5, then the new GLS has a lot from the younger GLE: for example, the front end and the interior. Okay, the pattern of the matrix headlights is slightly different, but otherwise very similar.
It doesn't matter that much anyway. The main thing is that the new GLS looks very cool and monumental: but the new visual style of Sensual Purity (sensual purity, if anything) this big Mercedes is very much. By the way, it is really big - not only longer than the previous generation, but also longer than the X7 by as much as 5 cm!
And the X7 certainly lacks one of the most unusual features we've ever seen - the “car wash” option. When you press this button, the GLS will fold the mirrors, close the windows and sunroof, turn off the rain sensor, switch the climate control to recirculation, automatically turn on the 360 ° video system and raise the suspension to the maximum height to make it easier to clean the arches.
By the way, in terms of the suspension, Mercedes is also ahead thanks to the plague E-Active Body Control. It scans the road ahead with the help of a stereo camera, prepares for irregularities, dampens rolls and controls each wheel. But the coolest thing is that it can bounce and sway like a real lowrider! Of course, this is not done for fun: this way the machines can get out of the sand.
Such a suspension is available only for the top-end First Class versions - unlike those that are simpler, they will not be assembled at a factory in the Moscow region, but imported from the States. But cars with a top-end V8 for 489 horsepower will not be brought to us yet: in Russia it will be possible to buy cars with a 2.9-liter diesel engine with a capacity of 330 horsepower, or with a 367-horsepower gasoline engine with a volume of 3 liters.
