The beginning of the story

The car known today as the “Toyota Mark 2” was originally planned as a project called the Toyota Corona Mark II. By the way, it was decided to add a number to distinguish the car from other models built on the Crown platform. But in the 70s, the car began to have an independent name. This happened after the split of the platform.

Already in the late seventies, the Toyota Mark 2 became a full-fledged base for creating other new sedans. They became known as Cresta and Chaser. They differed from their predecessor only in changes that affected the exterior, as well as interior design.

By the way, it is interesting that some cars were exportedeven left hand drive. These were the same “Marks”, only now they became known in foreign markets as Cressida. And then another Toyota appeared - called Avalon. So they began to actively supply it to the North American market. In fact, it was designed specifically for this.

90s

Car "Toyota Mark 2" quickly became popular and in demand. But then came the nineties. This time was not easy for many countries. So in Japan, sales of cars began to decline significantly, and this model was no exception. So Toyota decided to update a number of its sedans. However, Mark was again taken as the basis for creating new cars. And there was Toyota Verossa, which became a successful replacement for the previous two models, which were the Chaser and Cresta. Moreover, then the Mark 2 station wagon began to appear. The car was available in two versions - both with full and front-wheel drive. This car became known under the name Mark II Qualis.

Later, when the release of the seventh generation started, the Tourer V modification was released. There was a special engine under the hood of this car. Toyota Mark 2 then boasted a turbocharged 2.5-liter 1JZ-GTE with 280 hp. However, we should return to this later, but for now, pay attention to the most significant and famous versions of the model.

5th generation

Four years - from 1984 to 1998 - cars were released, which are representatives of the fifth generation of the "Mark" model. Total8 versions were available to potential buyers. Model 2Y was considered the weakest. Under its hood was a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder 70-horsepower engine. Next in power was 2L - 2.4 liters and 85 hp. He, unlike the previous one, was diesel.

There were also versions with a 6-cylinder 2-liter for 105 or 130 “horses”. Equal to him - 100-strong, with a volume of 1.8 liters. The next most powerful was a 2-liter 6-cylinder - it could produce 140 hp. (model 1G-GEU). But the 1G-GTEU car was especially popular. Under its hood, a 185-horsepower 2-liter 6-cylinder unit with a biturbo was installed. These are all versions that were available to the Japanese and foreign market. However, there was another model that was produced for buyers from the United States. She was known as 5M-GE. Its power was 175 hp, and the volume of the 6-cylinder engine was the maximum - 2.8 liters.

6th generation

These cars were published from 1988 to the very end of 1995. There were two different versions of the body - hardtop and sedan. And their difference was that the hardtops had no frames at the door glass. Plus, the differences were seen in the optics and in the grille. From 1992 to 1995, only sedans were released. And by the way, there are new engines. They were equipped with rear-wheel drive versions with automatic and mechanics.

There were a lot of units. The 6-cylinder 1JZ-GTE was considered the most powerful. Its volume was 2.5 liters, and the number of “horses” produced was 280. Plus, the unit had a turbocharger. The weakest were 2L and2L-T. Both of them were diesel and the same volume (for 4 cylinders). The first of these produced 85 hp, and the second - 97 hp. The 2L-T was turbocharged.

There were also versions for 115, 135, 150, 170, 180 and 200 “horses”. By the way, the last engine listed had the largest volume - three liters, to be more precise. He was known as 7M-GE.

7th generation

Cars produced between 1992 and 1996 are among the most famous of all Toyota Mark 2 cars. 90 body has become quite popular. There was both full and rear-wheel drive. Versions with a front also existed. The car "Toyota Mark 2" (90 body) boasted six different engines.

The weakest was known as the 2L-TE - a 2.4-liter, 4-cylinder, diesel that produces (due to turbocharging) 97 “horses”. There was also a unit for 125, 135, 180 and 220 “horses”, respectively.

It is worth noting that the most powerful variant (i.e. 280-horsepower 1JZ-GTE) was installed only on the sports rear-wheel drive Tourer V modification (which was described earlier). Cars with all-wheel drive could boast only 1JZ-GE (220 hp). And this engine worked under the control of a 4-speed automatic. Interestingly, the Toyota Mark 2 (90) car has become a kind of base, the basis for the production of other generations. And these engines later became the foundation for the JDM and drift culture known today.

End issue90s - early 2000s

The eighth generation has been out for exactly four years. It was also a rather powerful car, which became the next version of the Toyota Mark 2. 100 body has become especially in demand. It was decided to change the design of the model radically. Remained unchanged except that the overall dimensions of the body and interior. The transmission and chassis were also decided to remain the same. But everything else has changed.

New engines also appeared. There was a 97-horsepower “diesel”, while the rest of the units were gasoline. 1.8-liter 4S-FE with 130 “horses”, 140-horsepower 1G-FE with a volume of 2 liters, a completely new 1G-FE (BEAMS), producing 160 hp. - all these motors were installed under the hood of brand new cars from Toyota. There were three most powerful engines - for 200, 220 and 280 "horses". Actually, they were the most sought after and popular. It is not surprising why the technical tuning of the Toyota Mark 2 was extremely rare - and so all the characteristics were normal.

Interestingly, since September 1996, in engines running on gasoline, they began to use a special technology for changing the phases of gas distribution. Needless to say, even on the 1G-FE engine, the volume of which is two liters, a modernized cylinder head was used.

Technical advantages

Toyota Marks of the 2000s became much more technically advanced than their predecessors. It was decided to replace two turbochargers with one large ST15. The cooling system has been significantly improved, the torque has also increased. Fuel economy has improvedmore visible. Even the car accelerated more dynamically. Also, modern Toyotas were offered with ventilated brake discs, xenon headlights, an audio system, six powerful speakers, a subwoofer and 16-inch alloy wheels. And the basic equipment was distinguished by VSC and TRC systems. Climate control was offered as an option.

"Toyota" in the back of 100 received special recognition from people. The owners claim that this car is able to fall in love with any person who appreciates the bright and sporty appearance of cars. Reviews, in fact, varied. Some believe that the appearance could be made more conservative, while others like everything. Those who are not satisfied with something do tuning. Some put a new body kit, grille, optics. Other people who are fans of extreme riding put bipods to increase the eversion of the front wheels. They, as a rule, decide to improve the engine as well in order to improve the technical characteristics. And of course, style the car accordingly.

Tuning can be different. However, its price is not limited to a couple of tens of thousands of rubles. And it is important to give your car to real specialists in this matter. Because tuning by the hands of an inexperienced person can simply ruin the car. And not cheap. "Mark" of the early 2000s in normal condition will cost about 300-500 thousand rubles.
