Each car is equipped with a gearbox that transmits torque from the internal combustion engine to the drive wheels. In turn, gear shifting is impossible without a gearshift knob. This seemingly small detail plays an important role in the car. How it works and where it is located - later in our article.

Location and properties

At the moment, on almost all cars, the gear knob is located in the center relative to the driver's and front passenger's seats, next to the center console. The modern transmission lever has a floor-remote arrangement. The part itself is connected to the gearbox using cables, a roller and a special traction (backstage). The last element is located outside the box body. At the center console, the gear knob is located on almost every car, regardless of whether the gearbox is automatic or manual.

In some cases, the lever is located directly on the steering column. This location was popular onmany domestic cars, such as the 21st "Volga" and "Moskvich" of old designs. It gained great popularity in the 30-50s of the last century and was actively used on American and European-made machines. Nowadays, only German cars are equipped with such a lever, and even then equipped with automatic transmission and in limited versions. Moreover, this is rather not a lever, but a pair of buttons located directly on the steering wheel (they are called “petals” of gear shifting).

Why did the gearshift knob suddenly lose its popularity? The fact is that shifting gears with such a lever entailed increased wear on the rods, increased the risk of incomplete on / off speed, as well as “knocking out” the gear, up to the complete closure of the rods. Therefore, due to their unreliability, the steering column mechanisms gradually lost their popularity.

Shift Patterns

Most modern cars have a very primitive shift pattern, making it very easy to learn. Looking at the third photo, you can see that the gears are switched on in the longitudinal or transverse plane, and the modes themselves are placed parallel to each other. When the handle is switched from one mode to another, a special fork is activated, which pushes the lever, and by shifting the synchronizer, it turns on the desired gear. In the neutral position N, the device is held by several or one spring (see photo No. 4).

Gear knob: tuning

At the moment, gear lever tuning has become especially popular, especially among owners of domestic cars. Every second Zhiguli is equipped with a non-factory gear knob. Ready-made devices can be purchased at any specialized store. They are inexpensive. Chrome-plated handles without patterns are sold at prices ranging from 500 to 600 rubles. The same, only with neon illumination, cost 1,000 rubles. Leather or combined (chrome, patterns and leather) cost from 1 to 2 thousand. Some motorists tune the gear knob on their own - they purchase a small piece of leather, process it and sew it back into place.
