The internal combustion engine consists of several parts. This is the cylinder block and head. But also in the design there is a pallet. The latter also plays an important role. As in other parts of the engine, a sealing element is used here - a pan gasket. VAZ-2110 also has this element. But, like any other part, the gasket can fail. In today's article, we will look at what this part is and how to replace the pallet gasket with your own hands.

Pallet specification

This element is the lower part of the car engine (that is, the bottom of the cylinder block). What function does this item perform? The element serves as a protective block. Oil is also stored in the pan. When moving, it is additionally cooled. Outwardly, the pallet is a small bathtub.

Also, the element is a collection point for all impurities and particles that were formed during the operation of the piston group. ATthe engine pan contains small metal particles and chips - this is the production from the elements of the crank mechanism. Often, a magnet is installed at the bottom of the pallet, which absorbs all these impurities. How it looks, the reader can see in the photo below.

This is the transmission pan. There is also a pallet gasket here. The automatic transmission is equipped with these magnets without fail. Thanks to them, all metal chips are attracted and linger in one place. So it does not circulate throughout the system, working as an abrasive.

The pallet is mounted with fixing bolts. As well as at the junction of the block with the head, a gasket is used here. It is made of cork or rubber.

On older cars, the oil pan gasket was an ordinary sealant that smeared the joints and edges.

Reason for replacement

Manufacturers often install this part for the entire life of the car. The same can be said about the cylinder head gasket. However, if the engine has been overhauled, this sealing element must also be changed. But not only repairs can be a reason to replace a part such as a pan gasket. This operation is also performed in case of mechanical damage. For example, when a car hits a large stone or touches the pavement with a pallet.

Deformation, extrusion

Spontaneous deformation of the gasket often occurs. It must be understood that thisThe sealing element is subjected to high loads, pressures and temperature differences. And if from the side of the street the air temperature can be +15 degrees, then inside the pan the oil is heated to 110 degrees Celsius.

Also, the sump gasket is subject to deformation due to the high pressure in the oil system. What can cause this phenomenon? Often, seals and gaskets are squeezed out due to a dirty crankcase ventilation valve. The element must pass a mixture of oil vapors and condensate into the inlet pipe. If the valve does not work, the high pressure in the engine squeezes out all the sealing elements. It doesn't happen right away. However, replacing these parts will cost a tidy sum. Moreover, not only the parts themselves are expensive, but also the work of replacing them (for example, the rear crankshaft oil seal). To prevent this from happening, periodically check the crankcase ventilation system.

Signs

The first sign by which you can recognize the leakage of the gasket is an oil leak at the junction of the sump with the internal combustion engine. But since this element is the lowest point of the engine, it is not always possible to recognize a breakdown in time. Moreover, the scale of the problem can be different - from light "fogging" to black oil puddles. The first option is not so terrible for the car owner. Some drivers have been driving with this for years. However, if after a short stay on the asph alt oil streaks have formed, it is worth examining the condition of the pallet.

Also lost its tightnesspan gasket affects oil level. It will gradually decrease. How intensively the oil will leave depends on the scale of the tragedy. Driving with a dry engine is extremely dangerous. Once every thousand kilometers, experts advise checking the level on the dipstick. It should be above the average mark.

If it is at a minimum, the motor will experience oil starvation. Liners, rings and other elements work "dry" - elliptical cylinders and other problems form.

Tools

To successfully replace the pan gasket, we need the following tools and parts:

  • Twelve-hedron box.
  • Socket wrench "10" and "13".
  • Set of hexagons.
  • Jack, stops.
  • Clean rags.
  • Portable lamp.
  • Empty 5 liter container.
  • Degreaser.
  • New oil, gasket and filter.

Replacement

Having found the first signs of leakage of the pallet, you should immediately replace the gasket. But the problem can also be caused by a breakdown of the “bath” itself. In this case, we carefully examine the surface of the sump for mechanical damage - cracks, etc. If there are any, the crankcase should be replaced or repaired (depending on the extent of the damage).

To replace such a detail as the engine pan gasket, we need to drive the car into an inspection hole or hang its front part with a jack (at least on one side). Because the element isbelow, it is important to provide high-quality lighting with a portable lamp. An important point - if the replacement is made in cold weather, the oil should first be warmed up. Let the engine idle for a few minutes.

Depending on the design features, it is required to remove the metal crankcase protection.

It is installed abnormally - usually from the factory the car comes with plastic engine mudguards.

Since the crankcase is a kind of reservoir for oil, when dismantling it, you must drain all the lubricating fluid. To do this, unscrew the drain and filler plugs (the last one so that a vacuum does not form in the system, so that the oil quickly glass out). Place the container on the pallet first. Typically, passenger cars use up to 4-5 liters of oil. In the absence of a viewing hole, it will be difficult for us to place a bucket here - we need a flat container. To do this, we take the old canister and cut off the “sidewall” from it. We unscrew the plug and wait until all the liquid drains from there.

The next step is to thoroughly wash the outside of the pallet. Usually a lot of dust accumulates on its surface (since it is the lowest part of the car). And if the gasket has been pierced, then there will also be oil streaks on the pallet. It is extremely difficult to remove them. You need to use a spray degreaser.

Using the “10” wrench, unscrew the crankcase mounting bolts. Also, do not forget about the bolts that are above the beam and near the resonator collector. Next, carefully removepallet, prying the joints with a minus screwdriver.

Installation

The old pan gasket is removed with a utility knife. It is important to remove all its remnants so that the new one does not leak. Before installing the gasket (if it does not sit on the sealant), we coat the joints with oil. Then we fix the pallet with a new gasket in place.

Since the bolts are attached with a washer, we install the latter with the ribbed side towards the bolt head. Tighten them evenly, diagonally. Make sure that the gasket does not come out of the seat. Tighten the bolts in several stages.

What's next?

After that, fill in the oil (first the old one) and start the engine. We make sure that the gasket does not leak. If all is well, drain the old grease and fill in new. Don't forget about the oil filter. It changes along with the lubricant. Now it remains to install the metal crankcase protection (if any) in place and lower the car from the jack. This completes the replacement of such a part as the oil pan gasket.
