Incandescent lamps with two contacts are widely used in automotive and motorcycle equipment. However, many car owners do not understand why a two-pin bulb is needed and what role it plays in the headlight.

Scope of application

The taillight of a car can simultaneously play the role of a parking light and a brake light. Outwardly, it looks like this: if the parking lights or dipped headlights are on, then the rear section in the lamp is illuminated with red light. When you press the brake pedal, the section lights up much brighter.

The fact is that a two-pin light bulb consists of two spirals. The first is responsible for the dimensions and does not glow very brightly. The second thread lights up when you press the brake pedal and burns brightly enough. If one of the threads is burned out or broken, then, accordingly, the side light section or brake light will not work.

This type of backlight can also be found in the direction indicators on American cars. In them, the role of the side light and turn signal is performed by one orange lamp.

The two-prong bulb can also be installed in the headlights and perform the tasks of a running light or a regular position lamp when the low beam or high beam is turned on.

Varieties of lamps

There are often different options for lamps on sale. The main difference may be the plinth or version:

  • classic metal plinth;
  • baseless design;
  • two-pin LED light bulbs with or without base.

When replacing a burnt-out lamp, you should take into account the structural features of the cartridge or refer to the instructions. A win-win option would be to first remove the burned-out part and go to the store with a sample in hand.

LED options are able to give a brighter glow, while the service life of a quality product can be increased to 10,000 hours of continuous operation or up to 10 years. For comparison, a two-pin bulb with an incandescent filament can last no more than 1000 hours, which is approximately equal to 1-2 years.

When buying an LED lamp, it is important to understand that most German cars will simply refuse to work with it, giving a malfunction error in the on-board computer. The point is the resistance, which can be very different from the native part. "Deceive" the car's on-board system is possible only with the help of a lamp with a built-in driver that provides the necessary parameters for full operation.

Which lamps are better to install in a car or motorcycle?

The best solutionwill use the lamps that were originally installed at the factory. The fact is that the design of the optics implies a certain type of lamps and the direction of the glow.

LEDs, due to many features, have a directional light, and an incandescent lamp scatters light rays around itself. The optics for a standard lamp is designed in such a way that a special reflector collects all the rays and directs them towards the glass of the lamp. If an LED is installed in such a headlight, the glow can be dim and spotty - full illumination of the entire block reserved for the parking light cannot be achieved. For such a violation, you can even get a fine from the traffic police.

If LEDs were originally used in the car, then it is worth buying only original lamps built using the same technology. Then the optics will work in the correct mode, without creating problems for other road users. Factory-installed LED bulbs for cars are, in most cases, designed to last the life of the car and do not need to be replaced.

Which firms should I look out for?

It's not worth saving on lamps. A poor-quality product may require replacement within a week or even burn out during installation and testing.

When choosing, you should pay attention to well-known manufacturers:

  • Hella;
  • Osram;
  • Philips;
  • IPF;
  • Koito;
  • MTF.

Products from these manufacturers meet allrequirements and will work for the entire declared service life. Also, branded lamps meet the declared characteristics in terms of power and will not lead to melting of the inside of the cartridge and headlight.
