In the 1990s, the Japanese concern Nissan experienced a shortage of class "B" models. The company's engineers and designers were tasked with developing a car that would fill this gap. At the same time, special attention had to be paid to the original design and practicality of the car. The first test prototypes appeared in 1996. They were tested in the USA and Japan.
The production version of the Nissan Cube was introduced in 1998 at the Tokyo Motor Show. The name "Cube" was given to the car not by chance, but because of the shape of the body, the silhouette of which resembles a square.
Such a non-standard appearance appealed to the company's target audience - Japanese youth. For two years, the car was sold only in the Japanese market, and already in 2000, the official sales of "Cuba" started in the North American market.
The car is built on the "B" platform inherited from the Micra model. Migrated from an older relative and gasoline 1.3-literengine. The basic version of the car received a 4-speed automatic transmission. As an option, it could be equipped with a stepless variator. Available not only front-wheel drive, but also all-wheel drive version of the Nissan Cube. Feedback from car owners said that the company has something to work on, but in general, the "Cube" turned out to be a solid four.
Second generation
The second generation was introduced in 2002. The model, even more reminiscent of a square, appeared as a microvan with increased interior space. A distinctive feature of this generation can be considered the glass of the side rear door, combined with the trunk windows into a single whole. The tailgate opened from left to right.
Nissan also produced a special version of the Cube with an extended wheelbase and seven seats. This version was equipped with "e4WD" all-wheel drive.
The second generation "Cuba" no longer used the old 1.3-liter engines: it received two 1.4- and 1.5-liter gasoline power plants (since 2005). They all worked together with the same 4-speed automatic transmission or stepless variator.
In 2008, the concept of an electric version of the Nissan Cube - Denki was presented at the New York Auto Show. The new "Cube" began to be sold not only in the USA and Japan, but also in many European countries. The model was assembled in Sunderland, UK.
Third generation
The official debut of the latest generation of the car took place in 2008 at the Los Angeles Auto Show. In 2009, the novelty appeared in many world markets, with the exception of Eastern Europe, as well as Russia.
Design
Less angularity is the hallmark of the third generation Nissan Cube. "Tuning", which was carried out by Nissan designers, made the car more streamlined. The car received a narrow radiator grille, elongated oval headlights with high and low beam optics removed. There are six ventilation holes on both sides of the brand logo. The ingenious design of the grille led to the car being nicknamed the "Bulldog in Sunglasses".
The car's rear bumper is convex and more streamlined than its predecessor. In its upper part there is a rear optics united in an elongated oval.
Interior
The interior of the Nissan Cube has changed dramatically. The designers gave the interior the shape of a jacuzzi, no matter how strange it may sound.
It should be noted the wave-like dashboard of the car. While in the second generation the instrument panel and center console were combined into one whole, in the third generation they are independent interior elements.
The largest elements of the dashboard are the oval tachometer and speedometer. Between them is the on-board computer screen. Three-spoke steering wheel with medium grip. The center console protrudes into the cabin, and the instrument panel and niche above the glove compartment are in undulating recesses. In its upper part there is a head unit (expensive configurations are equipped withmultimedia Nissan Connect with a touch screen), on the sides of which there are oval air ducts. The climate control unit is located in its lower part, and compact cup holders are provided on the central tunnel.
The front seats "Cuba" with short cushions and weak lateral support are still quite comfortable.
High seating position provides the driver with excellent visibility. A wide reclining armrest divides the rear sofa into two places. The rear row backrests fold in a 40/60 ratio, thereby increasing the volume of the luggage compartment to 1645 liters.
Nissan Cube. Specifications
The third generation of "Cuba" is built on the same "B" platform. The wheelbase of the car is 2530mm, the overall length is 3720mm, the width is 1610mm and the height is 1625mm.
The range of engines for the Nissan Cube consists of three petrol and one diesel engines. Petrol engines are represented by 109-horsepower 1.5 liters, 112-horsepower 1.6 liters and 122-horsepower 1.8-liter power units. Diesel 1.5-liter engine is capable of developing 110 hp. With. All engines work in conjunction with a manual transmission in a five- or six-speed version, or are aggregated with a stepless variator.
