GAZ-69 is a Soviet off-road all-wheel drive vehicle. This model was produced in the period from 1953 to 1973. The first work on the development of this SUV began in 46. The car was developed, as they say, from scratch and was intended for use in the army and work in agriculture. GAZ-69 was produced in two versions. This is a two-door body with longitudinal benches at the rear or a four-door with a full rear seat. The design of the GAZ-69 car was practically unified with other models produced at this plant. And the frame, body and razdatka GAZ-69 were created from scratch. The unit from the GAZ-M20 was chosen as the engine. Its power was 55 liters. with., and the maximum speed with this engine is 90 km / h.
GAZ-69 is a full-fledged SUV with all-wheel drive. And this means that, in addition to a manual gearbox, the car must also be equipped with a transfer case. It is designed to distribute torque from the engine to the axles. Also, due to the transfer case, the torque increases when driving on bad roads.
Many fans of off-road vehicles are very interested in how the handout worksGAZ-69. Despite their age, these domestic cars are now actively sold and bought, restored and operated by various motorists. Elements from GAZ-69 are installed on other cars. That is why many are interested in the device, as well as the maintenance and repair of various units.
Description of transfer case GAZ-69
This assembly is installed behind the manual transmission. The mechanism is connected to the main transmission through an intermediate cardan shaft. The transfer box serves in this car to transmit torque to the rear and front axles. Additionally, the GAZ-69 dispenser is equipped with a reduction gear. This allows you to significantly increase the traction force on the wheels. It is interesting that on various modifications of the SUV, namely the GAZ-69A, the same transfer case is provided. The M-72 is equipped with the same mechanism. Naturally, there is still a small difference. It consists in levers that allow you to change the modes of operation of the box, as well as in spring ones in the form of plates. The latter are installed between the levers.
Unlike the manual transmission, the transfer case mechanism is equipped with only two speeds. This is a constant mesh operating gear and a reduction gear. What is the GAZ-69 dispenser capable of? Its gear ratio in the operational gear is 1.15, and the reduction gear has the number 2.78. Also among the features, the design of the gears can be distinguished. Those that are in constant engagement with other elements are made with oblique teeth. Such a featureallows you to significantly reduce driving noise.
Dispenser GAZ-69: device
The transfer case housing is made one-piece. In its upper part there is a special hatch that facilitates installation. It is closed with a special stamped cover. The box itself is mounted on the cross member of the chassis. Fastening is carried out at four points. The knot is attached to pillows - these are rubber elements.
Drive Shaft
It is mounted on ball bearings. There are two of them.
For ease of repair, these bearings are unified with those on the output shaft of the gearbox. The drive gear of the GAZ-69 transfer case is mounted on splines and secured with a flange.
Intermediate shaft
This transfer case shaft is equipped with gears. The intermediate element is rotated by two identical tapered roller bearings. The inner races of the bearings, as well as the gears, are secured with nuts.
Drive shaft
It is mounted on two tapered roller bearings. On the splines of the shaft there is a gear responsible for connecting the rear axle and the reduction gear. How it works? When the engagement lever is in the neutral position, the gear is free to rotate on the driven gear. At the back of this shaft are gears that act as a drive for the speedometer.
On the front of the shaft on its splines, a coupling moves, which is responsible for connecting the front axle. Front axle drive elementfixed on two supports. The front support is a double-row angular contact ball bearing. A special bronze bushing is installed as the second support. It is pressed into a hole on the driven shaft.
The collars of the three flanges are fitted with oil seals. They are identical to each other and unified with what the manual transmission output shaft has.
Breather, oil seals
A special breather is mounted in the crankcase of the shift rod. It is necessary to prevent excess pressure that may form inside the box.
In front of the oil seals on the drive shaft and on the drive shaft of the front axle, special oil-removing grooves are made. They are carved into the body of the lid. The device that drives away oil is a special helical teeth that are located on the drive gear of the speedometer drive.
How to drive the box
The process of switching the operating modes of the transfer case is carried out by means of two levers that are installed in the cover of the switching rods. This cover is fixed on the front end of the crankcase. The lever, located on the right, is designed to engage or disengage the rear axle and engage the lower row. It is three-position - it is a neutral position, a downshift (in the forward position is engaged) and the connection of the rear axle. The lever located on the left is designed to connect the front axle. The handle has two working positions. The front axle is off. If the lever is in the rear position, it is on.
Switch mechanism device
Mechanism installed infront cover. It consists of two rods, on which forks for switching are fixed with screws. The rods move by moving the levers. Their ends go into the grooves of the rods. The mechanism is also equipped with latches, which consist of springs and balls. These balls go into the holes of the rods. Felt and rubber seals are installed to prevent grease from leaking out of the rod sockets, as well as to prevent dirt and dust from getting inside. Additionally, the mechanism has a special locking device. It is designed to exclude the possibility of switching to a lower gear when the transfer case on a GAZ-69 car operates in the front axle off or low gear mode.
The principle of blocking is simple. The gaps between the end parts of the plungers are less than the total depth of the holes on the rods. In addition, the locking system protects the driveshaft and rear axle from possible overloads.
Transfer case service
Dispenser GAZ-69 is a fairly reliable device. Manufacturers have put a great resource into the mechanism and even today they still work properly. But all this is possible only with the right maintenance. It is necessary to constantly maintain the required oil level in the crankcase. Also, the lubricant must be changed periodically. In addition, faults should be detected and corrected in a timely manner. As for the oil level, it should be at the edge of the filler hole. It is recommended to change the fluid every 6 thousand kilometers. You should also drain the oil whenchange of seasons.
It is recommended to check the condition of the breather - if necessary, it must be cleaned of dirt or dust. They also periodically check how tight all the nuts are, and especially those that hold the cardan mounting flanges. Not even a slight weakening is allowed. If an oil leak is found, then tighten the nuts on the switching rod. Used grease is drained from the crankcase in a warm form. In any other case, complete removal will not work. Periodically, after changing the oil, it is necessary to flush the mechanism case with kerosene.
If you service the box regularly and correctly, then repair of the GAZ-69 dispenser will not be required. If the transmission began to hum, the repair consists in replacing a worn pair of gears. Even today, parts for this car are on sale.
Conclusion
With a large number of imported cars on the market, retro enthusiasts buy and restore cars like the GAZ-69. It's not just an interesting hobby. The only problem is finding spare parts. Fortunately, now there is a lot of things on sale, for example, a whole razdatka for the GAZ-69 car. Its price is about 5-10 thousand. There are many parts in good working condition.
