Minsk Automobile Plant is one of the well-deserved and oldest manufacturers of vehicles for transporting timber throughout the entire former Soviet Union. Cars are distinguished by reliability and high cross-country ability. In addition, the developers have released several modifications, each of which can perform complex work or a specific task. Until now, there are MAZ timber trucks of the first releases on the roads, not to mention the latest models.
Constructive series
The assortment of the Belarusian plant has developed a lot of modifications for timber transportation. Among them:
- MAZ-tractor with an extended frame (short log truck), designed for transporting short timber, is characterized by high cross-country ability, capable of transporting cargo over any distance.

MAZ-509: device
On the basis of the 500 series, MAZ-509 was built - a timber carrier that differed from its predecessor in a number of parameters. Its release began in the late sixties of the last century in several interpretations. At that time, the truck was considered one of the most modern vehicles in its class.
The power unit of this model was almost identical to the "five hundredth" MAZ. Its role was played by the YaMZ-236 engine, which was equipped with six cylinders arranged in a V-shape and a water cooling system. The transmission installed on MAZ timber trucks of the new release was significantly different from previous models. The car received four-wheel drive, a five-speed gearbox, a standard axle design.
To transport timber with this tractor, two two-axle dissolution trailers (GKB-9383 and TMZ-803M) were used, which were equipped with a special dragging mechanism. This made it possible to fold the trailer and load it onto a tractor; when laying out the structure, a timber carrier with four axles and two drive axles was obtained. Such transformation allowed moving in the most inaccessible places.
Technical parameters
The following are the characteristics that MAZ has - a tractor of the 509th series:
- width/height/length - 2, 6/2, 9/6/77 meters;
- wheelbase (m) – 3.95;
- curb weight (t) - 8, 8;
- ground clearance - 30 centimeters;
- motor power - 200 horsepower with a volume of 11.15 liters;
- top speed (km/h) - 65 with an average fuel consumption of 48 liters per hundred kilometers;
- maximum load capacity (t) – 21.
MAZ timber trucks of this series were divided into three main modifications (509P, 509A, 509), the main differences between which were in the transmission unit, exterior and some technical details.
New models
In the early 90s, Belarusian developers put into production a more modern timber truck MAZ-6317, which was produced in two interpretations (a log truck and a pass trailer). This approach made it possible to unify units and assemblies for working with different types of forests.
Technical data for this model:

- motor power - 420 horsepower;
- transmission - nine-speed mechanics;
- speed limit - 80 kilometers per hour;
- carrying capacity (t) - 1, 34/2, 91 (depending on modification);

The next model MAZ-6303 is a timber carrier, which is still in production. This log truckadditionally equipped with a hydraulic manipulator and props. Its specifications are:
- motor - diesel;
- drive – 64;
- power rating - 400 horsepower;
- carrying capacity - 15.8 tons;
- Gearbox - 9 steps, mechanics;
- top speed - 90 kilometers per hour;
- dimensions (m) - 6, 6/2, 5/3, 7 (length/width/height).
This machine is widely used due to the presence of service centers and the availability of parts throughout the former USSR.
Timber truck with manipulator: description
The MAZ timber truck with a hydraulic manipulator is a representative of special equipment used in logging and timber transportation. High productivity and efficiency are ensured by the CMU (universal loader crane) with the ability to capture assortment. According to the characteristics, trucks are not inferior to domestic and foreign counterparts.
Timber trucks MAZ 6312A9 series are used for transportation of assortment, boards and other wooden blanks and products. The truck is equipped with a YaMZ-65010 turbocharged diesel power unit. The power of the engine is four hundred "horses", it complies with the Euro-3 standard. The wheel formula of the car is 46, which provides high cross-country ability on difficult ground. With a maximum load capacity of 2.32 tons, the maximum speed of the machine is 85 kilometers per hour. The weight of the car when fully loaded is almost three and a half tons.
Features
Timber truck withmanipulator, made on the basis of MAZ-6303, received a number of improvements and improvements. Among them are the following aspects:
- chassis upgraded;
- reinforced subframe;
- two pairs of bunks were mounted to hold and securely fix the assortment;
- a pair of winches installed;
- a special barrier plate is equipped between the cab and the platform;
- possibility to install several types of hydraulic manipulators (from SF-62 to SF-85ST).
New MAZ timber trucks prove that their use helps to transport timber of different categories in extreme conditions. This is achieved thanks to the increased cross-country ability of the truck, its improved technical parameters, as well as compliance with all safety requirements.

Reviews of owners and specialists confirm the reliability and efficiency of using specialized MAZ trucks for transporting timber. No wonder these machines have been in demand for several decades in the territories of the former socialist countries and abroad. Additionally, it is worth noting the variety of modifications of timber trucks, which makes it possible to optimally select equipment for performing a particular operation.
MAZ timber carrier, the price of which in the secondary market starts from one million two hundred thousand rubles (series 6303 with a manipulator), occupies one of the leading places in terms of popularity in this class. The final cost depends on the condition of the car, its modification and the spent resource. A new model of a timber truck from Belarusian manufacturers will cost an order of magnitude more expensive, but still cheaper than similar foreign equipment.
Pros and cons
The advantages of timber trucks from the Minsk Automobile Plant include the following:
- an excellent indicator of the cross-country ability of all modifications for transporting timber;
- the ability to choose the best option among a variety of models;
- high quality indicators combined with an adequate price;
- unification of spare parts and assemblies;
- large range of used but fully functional cars;
- continuous improvement of production and the introduction of modern technologies;
- Parts availability in abundance and extended service nationwide.
The disadvantages include the fact that the level of comfort and additional equipment is still incommensurable with foreign counterparts. However, the affordable price, combined with reliability and ease of maintenance, almost make up for this.
Result
In the post-Soviet space it is difficult to find a vehicle for transporting timber better than MAZ log trucks. In the work, you can still find the first modifications that were created decades ago, while they show excellent results. New models, which are produced in series, have become an order of magnitude more economical, productive and functional.
