The Soviet truck "MAZ 500", the photo of which is presented on the page, was created in 1965 at an automobile plant in Minsk. The new model and its predecessor differ in the location of the engine, which was placed in the lower part of the cab. This arrangement allowed to reduce the weight of the car and at the same time increase its carrying capacity by 500 kilograms.

History

The base model was the onboard "MAZ 500" with a wooden body. The carrying capacity of the car was 7.5 tons, thanks to the 180-horsepower engine, the car could easily tow a trailer weighing 12 tons.

The new family of "five-hundredths" made up a lineup of the following modifications: dump truck "MAZ 500", truck tractor "505", timber carrier "509", and universal chassis "500Sh".

In 1970, a new car "MAZ 500A" rolled off the assembly line with an extended wheelbase and a load capacity increased to 8 tons. The overall dimensions of the truck have been optimized in accordance with European standards. The direct drive ratio was lowered, the speed of the car increased to 90 kilometers per hour.

"MAZ 500", the photo of which allows you to appreciate the new design of the second generation car, looks modern. A noticeable difference is the characteristic grille, which consists of eight rectangular air intakes.

"MAZ 500A" was produced for seven years, until September 1977, after which it was replaced by a new series - "MAZ 5335".

Diesel brand YaMZ-236, which was installed on the MAZ 500, could work without electrical equipment. This advantage was used by the military, who ordered the "500th" in large quantities for the needs of the Armed Forces of the USSR. The hydraulic-type power steering also did not need electrical power. The brake system was supplied with compressed air from the receiver, which, in turn, was filled with a constantly running compressor. No one was embarrassed by the lack of all-wheel drive "MAZ 500", the characteristics of the car and the power reserve of the engine were impressive.

Chassis

• Rear axle - reduction beam on longitudinal reinforced semi-elliptical springs. Shock absorbers are hydraulic, reciprocating action. Buffer limiters of vertical loads. Semi-axial differential planetary design, hypoid. Gear mechanisms for transmitting rotation in the rear wheel hubs.
• Cardan shaft - two-section with an intermediate support. Crosses on needle bearings.
• Brake system - pneumatic, with pressure supply from the receiver. The system only functions when the engine is running. All wheels have drum-type brakes.

Cab

"MAZ 500" is equipped with a spacious all-metal cab on a hingedlift. If necessary, the entire structure rises to a slope of 45 degrees, while providing access to the engine and all related mechanisms. The cabin is equipped with minimal amenities for relaxation.

The control mechanisms of the "MAZ 500" are conveniently located, the instruments are easy to read, the steering column is designed for a person of average height and is not adjustable. The cabin has good soundproofing. Heating works quite efficiently.
