Porsche 928 is one of the most luxurious and elegant coupes of this German company, produced in the late 70s. The production of the model, however, lasted almost 20 years - from 1977 to 1995. This car was direct proof that the Stuttgart manufacturers can do more than just rear-engined units.
History in Brief
First of all, I would like to note that the Porsche 928 was supposed to be released back in 1971, that is, six years earlier than it happened. Indeed, in the late sixties, the company's management wanted to remove such a legendary model from the assembly line as the 911th Porsche! It was believed that this car had already exhausted its resources, and the rear-engine design had no right to exist. But then we decided to leave this idea for now and start developing a classic version of the car.
To create the body panels of the Porsche 928, special galvanized steel was used in production. However, the hood, doors and front fenders were made of pure aluminum. Thanks to this, the weight of the coupe was reduced topossible minimum. In particular, this model is a whole quarter of a ton lighter than all its competitors, which are the Ferrari 400 and Jaguar XJ-S. And the company "Porsche" gave a guarantee on the body for a period of seven years. This was proof that the machine is reliable, because the panels are galvanized on both sides.
Exterior and Interior
True automotive connoisseurs know the nickname that distinguishes the Porsche 928. "Shark" - that's what they call it! Powerful 3-door coupe with the lowest possible center of gravity. A striking feature is the pointed front, which gives the impression that the model has an integrated bumper. Almost all of its area is occupied by direction indicators, license plate and “dimensions”.
“The front” is decorated with round retractable headlights. And the whole image is complemented by a long curved rectangular hood and flowing front fenders.
And the interior is a completely separate issue. The salon looks very expensive and luxurious - this can be seen from the above picture. Only expensive finishing materials were used. Inside there is a four-spoke steering wheel, a clear and understandable dashboard, hidden under a deep anti-glare visor. The torpedo has no sharp edges or corners. And the seats are also pleasing - they have excellent lateral support, thanks to which passengers are ideally “fixed” for the duration of the trip.
By the way, this car was in the Schemers program. The cocoa colored Porsche 928 was bought by host Mike Brewer for just £1,600. But after the work that was carried out on this machine, hegot 6000 for it! And indeed, the “Porsche” from an unloved, neglected car that stood in the garage for a long time turned into a model, sitting behind the wheel of which one might think that it was made yesterday. But you just had to invest a little - the car is good.
Powertrain
In the beginning, the car had to be equipped with a 300-horsepower 5-liter engine. But in the 70s the oil crisis came, so it was decided to abandon this motor. Instead, they put a 180-horsepower 3.3-liter unit. However, he did not fit. As a result, the status V8 was simply upgraded - the volume was reduced to 4.5 liters, and the power was reduced to 240 hp. The motor gave the car the ability to accelerate to hundreds in just 7 seconds.
Then the Porsche 928 S version came out with a 4.7-liter engine and a power of 300 “horses”. The maximum speed was 245 km / h. Then there was the second model - S2, with a 310-horsepower engine. In the late 80s, S4 also came out. Under the hood of this model was a 320-horsepower engine. With him, the car accelerated to hundreds in 5.7 seconds, and the speed limit was 274 km / h. By the way, any model could be equipped with either a 5-speed “mechanics” or a 4-band AT from Mercedes-Benz.
The most powerful version
And finally, a few words about the legendary Porsche 928 GTS. Under the hood of this car, a powerful 350-horsepower engine was installed, thanks to which the car could accelerate to 100 km / h in just 5.4 seconds. And the maximum speed was 274 km/h.
Particular attention should be paid to the suspension of the Porsche 928 GTS (1991). Fully independent multi-link design - thanks to her, the car was very "obedient" in handling. Moreover, Porsche specialists have introduced a new development - Weissach Axle technology. Due to it, passive control of the rear wheels was provided. And thanks to this, the effect of oversteer was eliminated.
In general, the 928th Porsche is a legendary German car, which to this day is powerful and attractive to true connoisseurs of old models.
