The clutch in a car is used to connect and disconnect the crankshaft and transmission, thus transmitting torque to the wheels or stopping the transmission. In a car with a manual transmission, always when starting off, when changing gears and when braking, you must manually engage or disengage the clutch, that is, connect or disconnect the crankshaft and transmission.
Clutch Disc
The work of the discs is to rub them together, and each of them is located on its own shaft. This is due to the fact that the surface of each disc is uneven. Thus, there is a clutch pressure plate (connected to the engine) and a clutch driven plate (connected to the transmission).
How does a clutch disc work?
When smoothly turned on under the influence of springs, the pressure plate is rubbed against the driven. The car moves off when both of these disks are used, that is, they touch and begin to rotate in the same direction. The clutch device can have either one driven disk or two; they are called, respectively, single-disk and double-disk. So,the former are mainly used in passenger cars, trucks with a small carrying capacity, as well as commercial vehicles and buses. They have the simplest device and low price, reliable and compact, while they have high wear resistance; they are easy to maintain, dismantle and repair. Most domestically produced cars are equipped with so-called dry friction clutches. In their device, a group of parts is distinguished that engages, disconnects and drives the clutch. Thus, switching on occurs under the influence of the action of the springs, while switching off occurs by overcoming this force when pressing the pedal. Friction clutches, depending on the type of springs, are different. The main difference is in the springs themselves. In clutch, they can be peripheral, as well as diaphragmatic. A more common type of clutch is in mechanical transmissions installed on modern cars: with a diaphragm spring. As for double-plate clutches, they are widely used in trucks, because due to the large mass of the vehicle, it is necessary to increase the friction surface area, while leaving the outer dimensions of the clutch unchanged.
Clutch replacement procedure:
- Clutch assembly being dismantled.
- The friction surfaces of the flywheel, clutch discs are examined, attention is paid to wear marks, scratches.
- In case of wear, components are replaced: flywheel, discsclutch, engagement clutch.
- The clutch is being installed. The pressure plate must be mounted on the flywheel, bolted; the pressure driven disk is addressed by its protruding part.
- When properly installed, the clutch should turn freely. All necessary parts must be lubricated.
