The design of any car, even with an automatic transmission, provides for the presence of such a node as a clutch. The transmission of torque from the flywheel is done through it. However, like any other mechanism, it fails. Let's look at clutch malfunctions and its varieties.
Destination
This assembly performs the function of short-term disconnection of the engine flywheel and gearbox, as well as their smooth contact when starting off. The clutch disc controls and prevents excessive loads on the assembly, and also dampens torque fluctuations. All this is located between the gearbox and the power plant of the car.
Varieties
At the moment, regardless of which gearbox is installed, there are three types of clutches:
- Electromagnetic.
- Friction.
- Hydraulic.
How does it work?
The principle of operation of this node is as follows.
When you press the pedal, the clutch actuator acts on the release bearing by moving the fork. The penultimate element presses on the petal of the pressure plate spring, which then go deep towards the engine flywheel. In this case, the tangential springs act on the pressure element. As a result, the transmission of torque from the flywheel to the box stops. When the driver releases the pedal, special springs decompress and bring the slave into contact with the pressure plate, as well as with the flywheel. Due to the friction force of the lining, the elements are “lapped in” - the transmission of torque is resumed.
Faults
One of the most common malfunctions of this node is slipping and incomplete shutdown. In the latter case, when the clutch pedal is fully depressed, it will be difficult to shift into gear. Her move itself is quite large. If slippage occurs, it may be accompanied by a burning smell in the cabin. This is due to the friction of the clutch disc linings on the flywheel. At the same time, acceleration dynamics drops significantly, and fuel consumption increases.
Is it possible to drive with such malfunctions?
If such clutch failures are observed, it is forbidden to drive such a car every day. In extreme cases, you can get to the garage or service station. In order to save the knot as much as possible, you should drive carefully, without jerking and gasping, carefully switching speeds. Experts recommend in this situation to use a double squeeze. Those who have learned to ride ZILs know this technology well.
The essence of it is as follows. To shift to a higher gear, you need to depress the pedal and move the gearshift lever to the neutral position. Then release the pedal, then press again and already turn on the desired speed. Downshift in the same way. The only thing to save synchronizers is to increase the speed a little before switching on by pressing the gas pedal. By the way, this method can be used "for everyday". Experienced motorists say that double release significantly saves gearbox and clutch assemblies. The resource of synchronizers is especially increased, which, during such operation, operate practically without loads.
Why does slip and wear occur?
Similar clutch failures appear due to the hard operation of the car. For example, in winter, the car sat "belly" on the snow. Trying to get out of this "trap", the car owner presses hard on the accelerator pedal. The same goes for driving in mud and sand. If you get stuck there, you don't need to burn the clutch - that way you will bury the wheels even more. And, of course, sharp starts with a thin section and riding “to the cutoff” contribute to this.
This reduces disk life by at least a factor of three. But not only this element tends to wear out. The clutch bearing is also under load. Determining its malfunction is quite simple. Like any other bearing, it begins to squeal and make other characteristic sounds. When the clutch pedal is fully depressed, standing in neutral, this sound disappears. But as soon asyou remove your foot, squeals appear again in the gearbox area. On vehicles where the clutch cable is installed, it tends to stretch.
How to ride without a bearing?
If the "release" has come to an end, you will not be able to fully disengage the clutch. Therefore, you need to touch in a special way. On a muffled car, we turn on first gear, then we start it in gear. If the battery has a good supply of charge, you will be able to start and drive in first gear to the nearest workshop. In this case, switching to an increased one is not recommended. The disc is in constant mesh, so the gears of the gearbox will endure heavy loads. If possible, it is recommended to take a tow or a tow truck.
However, some motorists share tips on how to shift from first to second and third without using the clutch. To do this, you need to gain a certain number of revolutions - the higher, the better. Then the accelerator pedal is reset and the next gear is switched on without gassing. If you do not observe the desired moment of revolution, you will hear a characteristic crunch. Therefore, such actions are allowed only as a last resort, in the absence of calling a tow truck or “pulling” in tow.
With regard to such an element as the clutch cable, its breakage or jamming can cause the assembly to fail. The disk will always be in the same position. If it is a hydraulic drive, there may also be fluid leaks fromdrive. As a result, clutch malfunctions such as slippage and incomplete gear engagement/disengagement occur.
Jerks
If the car twitches when starting from a standstill, several elements may wear out at once. This may be a seizure on the splines of the hub of the driven disk or wear of the element itself (damage to the existing linings). Jerks also occur when the damper springs are worn and the pressure element is deformed. Which node has failed is determined during disassembly by the presence of mechanical damage and traces of burning.
