Faster! Even faster! More! Although, it would seem, where else. Leading automotive companies in the world are fighting to create a car, to the name of which they will definitely add: "This is the fastest car in the world!". Competition for the maximum speed of your four-wheeled product is also a competition for prestige. It does not matter that the person behind the wheel of a superfast car has not been driving for a long time, but almost piloting it. It does not matter that the reflexes of such a driver should be no worse than those of the pilots of modern fighters. It does not matter that the surrounding landscape at full throttle merges into an indistinguishable colorful band. What are you talking about with so much at stake!

In all honesty, to the slogans appearing almost every week "The fastest car in the world has been created!" should not be taken seriously. As soon as you get a grasp of the text of the news, it immediately becomes clear: we are talking about another and not too good forgery of loud advertising. Graceful, stylish contours of a brand new car are not yet a guarantee of super acceleration and super speed.

Though everything is relative. Time passes, and the former breathtaking figures seem good-naturedly funny. It's hard to believe that this has happened in the past. As, for example, in the fact that the first car to reach a speed of 100 km / h was an electric car - at the very end of the 19th century! In less than forty years, and the new holder of the title of "fastest car" sped along the track five times faster. So far, no mass-produced car has come close to this indicator. With great difficulty, the Bugatti Veyron Super Sport was officially able to record 431 km/h.

It's hard to say why high-speed cars are needed on highways. They have already caught up and overtaken the jets accelerating down the runway. A little more - and the car ceases to be such, turns into … who? Ground fighter? A land-based missile?

In October 1997, the British apparatus Thrust SSC was taken to a specially created 21-kilometer track laid in the Black Rock Desert of Nevada. The fastest car in the history of mankind, equipped with two turbofan engines, looked like a polished black arrow in advertising stickers. It was not driven by a driver or even a professional racer, but by a fighter pilot of the Royal Air Force of Great Britain Andy Green. The record set by Thrust SSC in just 30 seconds of its flight staggered the imagination: for the first time in history, a controlled ground vehicle broke the sound barrier, reaching 1228 km / h! From the moment Chuck Yeager first took his X-1 to Mach 1,exactly 50 years and one day have passed.

Deservedly taking its 30 seconds of fame, Thrust SSC is now a museum piece: it was sheltered by the Transport Museum in Coventry. Meanwhile, engineers are preparing for the first tests of the new fastest car and again supersonic - Bloodhound SSC. In order to achieve the projected speed of 1609 km / h, three engines were installed on it at once, including the Eurojet EJ200 from the Eurofighter Typhoon combat fighter. No less surprising is the fact that Andy Green will again sit at the helm of the car - aged, but not losing a drop of his courage. The current year 2013 is marked in the plans of the Bloodhound SSC team as the beginning of its testing. Looking forward to a new record?
