Off-road vehicles have always been of particular interest. Equally, it affects the history of their appearance, technical device, test results and all kinds of rallies with their participation. Moreover, the number of cars that are classified as "jeep", i.e. cross-country ability is constantly growing. In many cases, there are stereotypes and beliefs about such cars, and they most often do not correspond to the real idea of \u200b\u200bwhat an all-wheel drive car is.

It is believed that such cars first appeared in the army. However, this is not

quite so, or rather, not at all. The very first was a four-wheel drive racing car, created near Amsterdam in 1903 to participate in the Paris-Madrid rally. Naturally, it did not take into account everything that became the norm for cars of this class over the next hundred years (locking differentials, correct weight distribution along the axes, etc.), it wasdifficult to drive and not safe to drive, which is not surprising for the first representative of an all-wheel drive car.

These vehicles with such a drive interested the military, and subsequent new all-wheel drive vehicles were made according to their orders. In this regard, one of the well-known manufacturers was the American company Mormon-Herrington, which became famous for converting ordinary trucks into all-wheel drive ones. Attempts were also made to obtain off-road cars, again at the request of the military. They held a tender in the United States before the Second World War, as a result of which the first serial all-wheel drive car, the "Bantam BRC 40", a prototype of the widely known "Willis" later on, appeared.

Since then, many varieties of off-road vehicles have appeared over the past time, as such cars began to be called, but in most cases they are only indirectly related to real jeeps. The classic version of a car belonging to this class has:

-downshift;

-permanent four-wheel drive;

-blocking of interaxal and cross-axle differential.

She has become quite rare now. She was replaced by a variety of modifications and imitations, including those using electronics. The logical result of the described approach to the design of a four-wheel drive car was a significant number of cars standing at the curb and unable to move on a barely broken road, although they are all considered off-road vehicles.

Here standsIt should be noted that real all-wheel drive cars require very precise, one might say, jewelry control, especially when cornering and when performing maneuvers. This is due to the fact that such a car can behave both as a front-wheel drive, with its inherent understeer, and as a rear-wheel drive, with oversteer when performing maneuvers. Most often, this is possible on a winding road when driving at high speed, which is caused by the design features of the all-wheel drive, and therefore driving such a vehicle requires high professional training from the driver.

Returning to the history of the triumphal procession of all-terrain vehicles around the world, it is worth

noting that in the USSR similar all-wheel drive cars GAZ 64 appeared in 1941 and were a copy of the famous "bow" - "Bantam BRC 40", although the designers had prepared their own version of an off-road vehicle. However, all these options for building an all-terrain vehicle turned out to be implemented later, and at the first stage, the country's leadership demanded to repeat the "Bantam BRC 40" and start its mass production.

The all-wheel drive car as one of the popular and demanded types of cars makes up a significant part of the existing fleet of such cars, and their number is constantly growing. The advantages of such a vehicle and the opportunities that are provided to its owner more than cover the costs and some inconveniences associated with the operation of suchvehicle.
