The underhood battery powers the starter, headlights and sometimes air conditioning, and the "underground" battery powers the electric motor, taillights, audio system and sometimes air conditioning. Both batteries are recharged by the generator only when they are discharged below a certain level, the rest of the time the generator does not load the engine.
