The Ford Scorpio is a business class car that rolled off the assembly line from 1985 to 1998. Inside the company, this model had a code name - DE-1. And she became a successful replacement for such a car as the Granada II. This car is loved by many people. But what she boasts is worth telling in more detail.
A bit of history
So, in 1978, a company called Ford Motor Werke AG started a new project called “Greta”. During the development process, computer graphics and modeling were used, and this moment became a key feature of the project. In fact, under the name "Greta" was the process of developing the body design of the future Ford Scorpio.
More than five hundred high-class engineers and designers were involved in the creation of the model. The car was tested in a wind tunnel, and this work did not just happen. After all, it is not for nothing that this car is called the most streamlined of the cars of those times. The body really had an advantageous, from an aerodynamic point of view, shape.
By the way, it was decided to test running prototypes in the Arizona desert and even in the Arctic Circle.
Characteristics of the first models
Ford Scorpio featured independent suspension on all wheels. In front was the popular MacPherson, which provided excellent comfort and stability. As for the brakes, their developers have equipped them with a special anti-lock braking system that reduces the braking distance even on wet or icy roads by up to forty percent. All models were fitted with front and rear disc brakes. The front ones are ventilated, the rear ones are not. With the exception, however, of models made in a station wagon body with a COSWORTH engine. There, the rear discs were ventilated.
Powertrains
And now you can tell in more detail about what engines were equipped with Ford Scorpio cars. These models were equipped with 6- and 4-cylinder engines, the volume of which varied from 1.8 to 2.9 liters. Accordingly, the power was at least 90, and as a maximum - 195 horsepower. In addition to these units, a diesel engine was added to the lineup. The volume was 2.5 liters, but the power was 69, 92 and 116 “horses” - the choice, as you can see, was rather big. The unit was equipped with one of two transmission options. Both a 4-speed automatic and a 5-speed manual were available.
Body and equipment
Two more interesting things to note when talking about the Ford Scorpio. This car received mostly positive reviews, and often precisely because of its attractive appearance. It was a really spectacular sedan. And then came the station wagon. Before that, by the way, the very first option was a hatchback. It lasted for 9 years - from 1985 to 1994. By the way, the car was produced both with left and right hand drive.
The equipment of the car was quite modest. But on the other hand, every engine installed on the Ford Scorpio had an ABS system. And in all salons a comfortable ergonomic driver's seat with an original design and a spacious luggage compartment were installed. If you fold the back row, you get a whopping 1350 liters of free space!
In 1994, the model was restyled. And so the second generation of the car appeared. It became more original, more extravagant, but did not gain popularity in Europe, despite the steering wheel adjustable in all directions and front airbags. So in four years, only 98,578 copies were published.
II generation engines
The second generation Ford Scorpio had a slightly different characteristic. As are the motors. Under the hoods of these cars, 2-, 2, 3- and 2.9-liter power units were installed, the power of which varied from 115 to 210 horsepower. The diesel engine was also, still 2.5 liters, only the number of “horses” it produced was 115 and 125. Interestingly, all these new engines had an EEC-IV computer that was capable ofprocess 250 thousand bits / sec. And an improved fuel injection system has also appeared.
In general, you can talk about engines for a long time and a lot, since American specialists have devoted a lot of time to developing the "heart" of the car. But one thing is for sure: the motors turned out to be very strong and durable.
A few fun facts
A lot of interesting things are known about these cars. And every person whose hobby is cars should know about them. For example, the Ford Scorpio is the first car in the world to have the ABS system installed in series. That is, it was available in any modification. Due to the fact that this Ford was made on the basis of the Sierra, there was no need to invest huge sums in production - 385,000,000 dollars were enough.
And in the United Kingdom, this model still wore the Granada nameplate. "Scorpio" was the name of all other cars that were sold in other European countries until 1994. Then there was a restyling, and the model everywhere began to bear the name Scorpio.
What else can I tell you about Ford Scorpio spare parts? Perhaps the brakes can be noted with special attention. Their peculiarity is that if the ABS vacuum booster fails, the front brakes remain operational.
It is also worth knowing that this particular model was recognized as the “Machine of the Year” exactly 30 years ago (in 1986). Also an important fact is that each all-wheel drive model of this"Ford" had a self-locking rear differential. And, of course, everyone should know that this car, which is considered and is American, was produced in Germany. For the American market, this model was called differently. Namely - Merkur Scorpio. Even the emblem was not “Ford”, but different. Here are some interesting facts.
