Almost 5 years ago, a rumor appeared on the net that AvtoVAZ began to produce Chevrolet Niva SUVs with a diesel engine in limited series. However, the rumor was not confirmed. The fact is that at the Volga Automobile Plant the question of developing new diesel engines for Chevrolet Niva SUVs did not even arise. Their production is carried out by a separate enterprise - "Theme-Plus". The management of AvtoVAZ only agreed to release their cars under the brand name of the company of this tuning studio.
What is the difference between the Niva Chevy diesel and its petrol version?
We note right away that the changes concern only the technical part. Externally, the diesel Chevrolet Niva, produced at the Tema-Plus enterprise, differs only in the “1.9 Td” sign on the trunk lid (see photo No. 2). In the technical part, the engine and gearbox are completely changed.
Engine and gearbox specifications
The new unit differs from the petrol unit in its power and torque it produces. So, the Tema-Plus tuning studio produces two versions of power plants with a capacity of 100 and 120 horsepower. The last unit differs from the first in the presence of a turbocharger. Paired with diesel units is a 5-speed manual transmission, which is supplied by the Japanese company Aisin. With its working volume of 1.9 liters, the Niva Chevy diesel absorbs no more than 7.5 liters of fuel per 100 kilometers. For comparison, its gasoline version spends up to 12 liters per "hundred".
Benefits
The main advantage of the Niva diesel modification is certainly its low fuel consumption, which we just talked about. Also, the Niva Chevy diesel is characterized by its power and high traction at low revs, which is especially important on all-wheel drive SUVs when driving off-road. It is also worth noting the presence of a built-in air conditioner and hydraulic power steering on all modifications of the Niva from Theme-Plus.
Flaws
They, unfortunately, are much more than advantages. Basically, motorists complain about the increased noise of the engine, comparing it with the operation of a tractor. There are also claims to the transmission. Its gears are too short, which is very unusual for our motorists. But what is most surprising is the engine start technology. After turning the ignition key, the "Check Engine" light is constantly on, and only after it goes out (approximately5-10 seconds of waiting), you can shift into gear and continue driving.
Chevy Niva diesel – price
Excessively high cost is perhaps the decisive factor that put an end to the mass production of these SUVs. There are only a few diesel "Nivs" in Russia, and in most cases they are converted by car owners themselves. Judge for yourself, the minimum cost for a Niva Chevy diesel in the basic configuration is 597 thousand rubles. For this price, you can buy a completely normal imported SUV on the secondary market, or report 200 thousand and buy a zero Grand Vitara. It is much better and more reliable than any Niva, whether it is a series with a gasoline or diesel engine.
