BMW E36 is the third generation of the 3rd series of the popular Bavarian manufacturer. And it was produced from 1990 to 2000. Despite the fact that the time period is rather short, over the years the German concern has managed to release a large number of different models, each of which has its own features and technical characteristics.

History

Before talking about the technical characteristics of this car, it is worth talking about how it came into being. The BMW E36 series began to be developed by engineers back in 1983, but the final design was approved only five years later, in 1988. Well, the presentation was held in 1990 in Europe, and a year later, in 1991, in Canada and the USA. An interesting fact is that the 1991 car was presented as a 1992 model. It is worth noting that BMW E36 cars were wildly popular. It was these machines that laid a very solid foundation for success - manufacturers continued to use them further to make their owncars are even more in demand and bought. The cars were really good, and in 1998 the diesel version of the BMW E36 320d won the 24 Hours of Nürburgring. Competitors were left far behind, and the Bavarian took the lead due to low fuel consumption.

Engine

However, all the same, cars equipped with this engine were produced for three years. The 328i version is more powerful - the volume reaches 2.8 cm3, and the power has increased to 190 hp. By the way, the maximum speed that the model develops with this engine is 240 km / h. But, of course, the most powerful option is the M3 - 3.2 cc, 317 horsepower, 250 km / h - this engine was a success, and it was produced until the end of the series.

M 40 - improved modification of M10

I would like to note the BMW E36 M40 with special attention. This is a model with a four-cylinder piston 8-valve engine, the volume of which reaches 1.8 liters. Production of the M 40 began in 1987 and continued until mid-1994. During all this time, about 840 thousand power units were manufactured. M 40 replaced M 10 and, I must say, it was a worthy engine. It has become much more perfect and powerful. Firstly, its performance has increased, and secondly, the torque curve has become more favorable. The developers did not disregard the work of the mechanics, it was also improved. The design has become more compact and, finally, in general, this engine turned out to be more economical than its previous version. But in order for the engine to last as long as possible, the belt should be replaced every 40 thousand kilometers. And, of course, change the oil on time - and only for high-quality. In order for the motor to serve faithfully, you need to take care of it.

Body

It's a matter of taste. Some choose the BMW E36 coupe, others the shortened "Compact" or convertible. It all depends on the personal preferences of the potential buyer. However, if we talk about popularity, it should be noted that the most famous car is a sedan. Actually, that is why there are most of them in the automotive market. In principle, this body does not cause any complaints - it has a fairly high anti-corrosion protection. The most important thing is not to squeeze all the speed out of the car on bad roads, otherwise the suspension geometry will change, and this is not very good. Controllabilitywill get worse, and this affects not only how comfortable the driver will feel behind the wheel, but also his safety.

Comfort to drive

An important aspect that motorists rely on when choosing a car is how comfortable this or that model is to drive. The BMW E36 has good driving characteristics, and this is not at all surprising - with such and such technical characteristics. It is worth noting that the owners of the E 36 often think that it would be time to improve their “iron horse”, despite the fact that this model has everything you need - and intechnically and externally. However, you always want something more. Well, for BMW E36 tuning can be useful. You can replace the shock absorbers - a good alternative would be those made by H&R, Bilstein B6 or Koni Sport. You can replace the levers - often they choose those that are installed on the E 30 model. The fact is that there is no rubber in their ball bearings, due to which the E 36 becomes easier to manage. Many decide to replace the stabilizers, for example with H&R. This will reduce the load on the wheels. Aluminum spacers should also be installed. They are more expensive than steel, but much lighter and stronger. And, finally, it will not be superfluous to install alloy wheels and reinforced brake hoses. All these small changes will help make the car better, increase its performance, power and reliability.

Best choice

In general, BMW owners are satisfied with their choice, arguing that this is a really good car, distinguished by reliability and sufficiently high power. Some even share tips on which model to choose. Of course, most motorists argue that the maximum configuration is the best option. Be sure to take it with air conditioning and a stove, because in summer it will be very hot in a car without these additions, and in winter you will have to warm up well. It is also desirable that the car has cruise control. In general, the owners do not advise taking the minimum configuration - it is better to spend a large amount, but be fully satisfied. Air conditioning, BMW E36 stove, cruise control,ESP, anti-lock braking system, airbags - all this should be in the car. What really pleases motorists is its simple repair. And, I must say, BMW breaks down extremely rarely. Still, a reliable manufacturer, and the famous German quality makes itself felt.

Cost

And, finally, a few words about how much you have to pay for such a car, if you want to buy it. About 350 thousand rubles will cost a used BMW E36. The price is small, but you need to remember that the car will be used and at least 15 years old. There are also cheaper options - cars of 1997, with automatic transmission, with an audio system, etc. A good used BMW can be purchased for less than 290 thousand rubles. In general, this is a good option for drivers for whom the most important thing is that the car is reliable, powerful, comfortable and easy to maintain and repair. In addition, such machines look quite presentable. BMW E36 is a good combination of indicators such as price and quality. No wonder this model was once one of the most popular in the world, and to this day remains in demand.
