In any part of the world there are places where roads have not yet been laid, where it is impossible or impractical to lay them. But, paradoxical as it may sound, you still need to somehow move around in such an area. And humanity has found a way out of this situation - invented all-terrain vehicles. Since their appearance, many varieties have been created - cargo, passenger, with various installations for performing work, on tracks and on wheels.
History of all-terrain vehicles
The first car that could overcome the snow appeared in 1912 thanks to the Russian engineer Kuzin. She had her shortcomings - the all-terrain vehicle could only overcome the plains, he could not do small climbs.
The next period in development was post-war developments. In the north, large tires from trucks were put to the motorcycle. This is how karakat appeared. This, one might say, is the first all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires. They did an excellent job of being a vehicle.traveling on fluffy snow or when crossing a polynya. Their speed reaches 50 km/h.
The first domestic cross-country vehicle was the development of "Arktitrans" - "Nara". To create it, a wheelchair was used - a wheelchair user. However, the Arktika model boasts industrial design. It has a cockpit that was made from the fuel tank of a military aircraft. And after that, the era of creating machines that can overcome off-road began.
In addition to developments in design bureaus and at machine-building enterprises, craftsmen also created all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires with their own hands. For this, bodies from domestic VAZs were used (most often), but other models were also used.
Of course, the largest number of developments and all-terrain vehicles were produced in the USSR and the Russian Federation. In other countries there are some models that deserve attention, but there are very few of them, and it’s not a fact that they are better than Russian ones - it’s just the manufacturer’s name that plays a role.
Design features
Super-passability of snow and swamp vehicles is explained not only by low-pressure large-diameter tires. After all, ordinary SUVs, designed for trips outside the city, are not able to overcome swamps, rivers or snow drifts. All-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires also have an articulated frame. This design solution allows the wheels to be located at any angle with respect to each other. This, in turn, providesstability and prevents rollover on very sloping terrain. The second feature is special lugs on the treads.
Types of snowmobiles and bogs
ATVs with low pressure tires are categorized as follows:
- By fuel used - gasoline and diesel.
- According to the ability to overcome various obstacles - land and amphibians.
- According to their application, they are passenger, freight, cargo-passenger, tractors and road trains.
- According to the type of frame on which the body is installed - articulated, articulated, on a single frame.
Any all-terrain vehicle must be selected according to the terrain and conditions in which it will be used. Not all wheeled ATVs can appear on public roads.
Advantages of wheeled all-terrain vehicles
Gone are the days of irrational use of natural resources. Today, a lot of efforts are being made to preserve the environment. And the biggest advantage of wheeled snow and swamp vehicles is tires for all-terrain vehicles. Due to low or ultra-low pressure and a large area, they are not only able to move through difficult terrain, but also practically do not damage the ground cover. That is, the soil and plants receive minimal damage.
Arktitrans all-terrain vehicles
The most common family of snowmobiles is the Lopasnya. All-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires under this brand have proven to be very reliable -still in working condition are models that went out of production in 1989. Their use is very wide - they can move on clay, a washed-out dirt road, on dug up arable land, on snow, a swamp, and overcome water obstacles. They can also overcome obstacles up to 40 cm high and terrain slopes up to 87%.
The Lopasnya is produced with 4x4 and 4x6 wheelbases and is equipped with two sets - for winter and for summer. The design is less subject to wear due to the independent suspension that takes on shocks. The cabin of the all-terrain vehicle is made in the likeness of the aircraft fuselage from duralumin and completely protects all important components from damage.
In the design, VAZ components and mechanisms were used, so finding spare parts for repair or replacement is not difficult. Despite the fact that the Lopasnya is a snow and swamp vehicle, it qualifies as an agricultural vehicle and does not require registration. However, it can appear on public roads.
Nord-Avto ATVs
The Wanderer family of cars, which are suitable for the harsh environment of nature, is represented by this company. The very first model was released in 2004 and was a three-wheeled amphibian designed for tourist trips. To date, the company produces "Wanderer-08" and "Wanderer 10" (modification of the previous model).
The car is two-section, has longitudinal balancers and eight driving wheels. The transmission was created according to the analogue of the "Niva", used as a power plantVAZ-2103 engine. The standard equipment includes a centralized tire inflation system - it can be carried out directly from the driver's seat.
Stability is ensured by the low center of gravity, the width of the car and the large displacement of the wheels. Cross-country ability is achieved through a fifty-centimeter ground clearance, a smooth bottom, a large tire area and pressure adjustment in them. Most of the components for the all-terrain vehicle are taken from VAZ car models, so in the event of a breakdown, repair is not a big problem.
The car can take up to 6 passengers, has a gasoline engine, disc brakes, is equipped with 2 tanks of 39 liters, speeds up to 50 km/h on hard surfaces, 1.5 km/h on water.
Tanks are not afraid of dirt
Under such an advertising slogan, KAMAZ vehicles were sold and promoted in many cities of the CIS. Indeed, both military and civilian vehicles of the automobile plant were distinguished by excellent cross-country ability. In the civilian version, they are used to transport goods to facilities under construction, and not only in all regions of Russia, but also in the countries of the entire CIS. The machine turned out to be so successful and reliable that it is also used for military purposes, with appropriate modifications, of course.
Military all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires (photos can often be seen on news sites) are designed for reconnaissance operations. KAMAZ-43269 "Shot" (aka BPM-97) has light armor, is produced in modificationswheelbase 4x4 and 6x6 ("Bulat"). It should also be noted the development of "Typhoon" - it supplanted both "Shot", and "Bulat", and the Mustang family. The tires on the KAMAZ all-terrain vehicle are designed as radial and with adjustable pressure. They are produced at the Nizhnekamskshina Production Association.
KAMAZ Competitor
Another Russian off-road truck is the Ural. Its distinguishing feature is the widespread use in harsh climatic conditions, the simplicity of the design of the main engineering units and assemblies. Maintenance and repair are no problem. In principle, all the requirements of the military industry.
Ural all-terrain vehicles are trucks with different wheelbases, depending on the purpose. They are used in both civilian and military settings. Tires for the Ural all-terrain vehicle are produced at the same plant as for KAMAZ trucks.
Homemade doesn't mean bad
As a rule, in order to create all-terrain vehicles on low-pressure tires with your own hands, you must first determine the operating conditions. You can find blueprints if you look hard enough. The following should be remembered - as an engine it is better to use those that have a forced cooling system (VAZ ones are perfect), independent suspension and large tires. You can buy them, or you can also bring them to the desired condition yourself. Peeling tires for an all-terrain vehicle is carried out for the reason that you cannot put a snow and swamp vehicle on chamber wheels. And truck tires are much cheaper than ready-made tires for high-end vehicles.patency.
