Owl Motorcycle: First Issues

Initially, this model had a single-cylinder two-stroke engine, two-channel scavenging loop according to the Schnurle patent and a four-speed gearbox. Engine power was twenty and a half horsepower at 6300-7500 rpmminute. The model had contact ignition, torque up to 14 Nm at 5100 rpm, a G-411 generator, a different form of a gas tank, a trunk and a guard to protect the motorcyclist's knees. The maximum speed was eighty and a half kilometers per hour, dry weight - two hundred and twenty and a half kilograms.

Start of modernization

A few years after the first release, the designers had technical solutions that were aimed at improving performance, reliability, as well as improving the appearance. In 1976, the Sova motorcycle was modernized.

The improved version outwardly differed from the previous one in the round shape of the turn signal lights (they used to be rectangular), rear lights and a muffler of a new shape. A new light device was used alarm system, non-contact electronic ignition system, new muffler. Engine power was twenty and a half horsepower, torque - 15 Nm at 6300 rpm. Maximum speed - eighty-five and a half kilometers per hour, dry weight - two hundred and twenty-two and a half kilograms.

Owl 200 Model 1977-1979: Need for Speed

During this period, the designers made a lot of efforts to significantly increase engine power, which increased to twenty-four and a half horsepower at 6700-7900 rpm, while maintaining the same displacement of 173.7 cubic centimeters and maximum torque up to 1.6 kgf m (16 N m) at 5600 rpm. Thanks tochanging the configuration of the channel in the cylinder, the crankcase and the new cylinder head, the compression ratio increased to 10.4. The front fork was mechanically changed: the diameter of the pipe increased and the shock absorber was improved as much as possible at that time. The fork travel was increased by twenty millimeters and amounted to one hundred and sixty-nine and a half. Now the motorcycle "Owl 200" began to reach the maximum speed of up to one hundred and five kilometers per hour, while its dry weight was one hundred and twenty-one kilograms.

Owl 175 model 1981-1983: big gas tank and improved brake

In 1981-1983, the gas tank was replaced, which began to hold three and a half liters of fuel more, as well as the intake system, rear shock absorbers. Thanks to design solutions, the Owl 175 motorcycle received a greater energy intensity, the new batteries were located at an angle of twelve degrees to the vertical, which provided the wheels with a stroke of one hundred and fifty-nine and a half millimeters.

In addition, the upgraded model uses a modernized brake, increased from one hundred twenty-five to one hundred and sixty millimeters in diameter of the brake drum, wheels, a G-427 generator with a rated voltage of 7 V, and an improved saddle. The maximum speed was still one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour, and the dry weight was still one hundred and twenty-five and a half kilograms.

Owl Motorcycle: 1983-1985 model specifications

In 1983-1985, the cylinder fin acquiredincreased cooling surface. Some of the engines began to be equipped with a Czechoslovak-made carburetor, which was in great demand in Soviet times and was a huge deficit. A novelty was the installation of a new twelve-volt electrical equipment:

  • FG-137B headlights with European beam diffusers;
  • new rear lights with side reflectors.

Over the headlights, plastic control units were installed: control lamps for direction indicators, ignition switch, low and high beam, speedometer.

In addition, anti-theft locks were installed. The front shock absorber received a rubber corrugated cover, which made it possible to prevent dust from entering it as much as possible. The modernized motorcycle "ZiD Sova" received a new profiled shield on the front wheel, a kickstarter lever with a folding pedal instead of a solid one, a folding footboard for the driver, and a rear-view mirror. At a maximum speed of one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour, the dry weight was one hundred and twenty-two and a half kilograms. In 1985, the motorcycle receives a new sports-type steering wheel with jumpers, a roll bar, two rear-view mirrors, a special tourist equipment (rear trunk with a side section, a side bag made of genuine leather, a tablet bag for a fuel tank). The motorcycle is decorated with new inscriptions on the tank and on the lid of the tool box, which are made of a special lavsan film. The maximum speed was one hundred and five and a half kilometers per hour,dry weight - one hundred and twenty-five and a half kilograms.

Changes in 1989: new engine and increased power

In 1989, a new engine was installed on the old chassis, which had a special petal valve. The upgraded motor was distinguished by a cylinder that had a five-channel purge and two outlet windows. The bore was increased from 61.5 to 63.5 millimeters, and the piston skirt was also enlarged. Power increased to 35.5 hp. With. at 6000 rpm, maximum torque - up to 17 Nm at 5500 rpm. The engine has one muffler. The steering wheel of the motorcycle has expanded, having received jumpers. The chain has been extended by three links.

Thus, we see that the motorcycle "Owl" had very different characteristics over the years of its existence. Let's take a closer look at the characteristics of the latest models.
