Everyone has seen and knows this car. Many choose it as the main transport for fishing trips, and some still use it for the city. Indeed, the Niva is lighter than the UAZ, and more like a passenger car (the key difference is the lack of a frame). There are, of course, downsides - this is a short base, which affects the volume of the trunk and cabin space. But this does not matter, because elongated modifications are produced from the factory. So, what kind of car is this? VAZ "Niva-2131" is a Russian small SUV with permanent all-wheel drive and monocoque body.

The car is based on a three-door"Niva" model 2121. An extended version has been produced since 1993.

Appearance

The car has the same design as its three-door modification. The body has a simple and clumsy shape. Up front is the usual black grille and round halogen headlights. Above - marker lights and turn signals. The bumper is made of metal. On the sides there is a wide black molding with a huge inscription "VAZ-2131". Mirrors - black, without repeaters of turns and electric adjustments. From the factory, stamped 16-inch wheels are installed on this machine. Separately, it is worth noting the new "Niva-2131", which was called "Urban". This car has a slightly different, more modern and pleasant design. Essentially, the body structure remained the same. Of the changes, only the bumpers, which have now become plastic, and the radiator grille, which has received a more stylish look (the photo of the model is in our article).

The mirrors on the Niva also changed. By default, the car is equipped with alloy wheels. Otherwise, there are no differences. This is still the same "Niva", built on the basis of the "three-door", which, in turn, was released back in the distant 70s.

Does this car have any bodywork problems? Some say that because of the elongated base on the Niva, it breaks the power elements of the body, like the frame on the Gazelle. But in practice, no one has proven this, and these statements are only arguments. As for the quality of painting, this is really the weak point of the Niva. Although compared to the UAZ, this car is not so quickly covered with chips androts. Dimensions, clearance

Due to the long base, this model practically goes beyond the compact class. So, the length of the car is 4.22 meters, width - 1.68, height - 1.64 meters. The main advantage of the Niva-2131 car is the clearance. On standard wheels, the ground clearance is 21 centimeters. This is quite enough for driving through broken yards and even off-road. Despite the long base, the geometric cross-country ability of the Lada Niva 2131 decreased only slightly. But on the "Urban" low bumpers noticeably affect the corners of the congress and exit. Off-road, they become the most vulnerable part of the body.

Inside the car looks the same as the three-door Niva. The front panel was borrowed from the Zhiguli (five). The instrument panel is from the VAZ of the Samara-2 family. Nearby is also a 12-volt cigarette lighter and a small niche for small items. The standard glove box is also small. The seats are soft, without much lateral support. There is no armrest here. Airbags are also missing. But there are belts with pretensioners and a system for attaching childrenseats.

If we talk about the level of equipment of the car VAZ "Niva-2131", it is quite poor. All adjustments here are mechanical, there is no heated seats and air conditioning. There are no acoustics and power windows. Moreover, in this configuration, the VAZ Niva-2131 car was produced until the release of the updated version of Urban. The latter, for a fee, can be equipped with air conditioning, heated seats and mirrors, as well as electric windows. But again, there is no standard acoustics here.

Due to the lengthening of the base, the volume of the trunk has also increased. So, "Niva-2131" is able to fit up to 420 liters of luggage. But that's not all. Niva-2131 was equipped with several engines. There are two in total. These are in-line, four-cylinder petrol power units. Now the new Niva comes with only one engine. But more on that later.

With a volume of 1690 cubic centimeters, this unit develops a power of 82 horsepower. Torque - 129 Nm at four thousand revolutions. The compression ratio is 8.5, the piston stroke is 80 millimeters. According to the owners, the resource of this unit is from 100 to 200 thousand kilometers.

Since 2006, Niva-2131 has been equipped exclusively with an injection engine. It is the motor model 21214. This unit was built on the basis of the previous one. The block and head are made of the same materials. The timing drive is chain, the mechanism itself is eight-valve. With a volume of 1.7 liters, this unit develops a power of 83 horsepower. Torque - 129 Nm. The engine resource has slightly increased and is about 200-250 thousand kilometers.

Transmission

This car works with a five-speed manual transmission. The transmission is also borrowed from the three-door Niva and has the same problems - synchronizer wear and increased gear noise. The transmission oil in this gearbox should be changed every 40 thousand kilometers.

Dynamics, consumption

The car is quite heavy. Therefore, "Niva" does not have acceptable dynamics. Acceleration to hundreds takes from 22 to 25 seconds. The maximum speed is 135 kilometers per hour. Concerning the expensefuel, on average, this figure is 11 liters. The car can stay in the general flow, but you will have to forget about any races forever. This car has a completely different purpose.

Carburetor or injector?

When buying a VAZ Niva-2131 car with mileage, many motorists ask this question. What problems do owners of injection SUVs face? Since they meet Euro-3 standards and higher, the exhaust system must have a catalyst and an oxygen sensor. These two elements can fail. And it wears out very quickly. It is not uncommon for the catalyst to be changed under warranty. But as operating experience shows, a much better and more reliable solution is to install a flame arrester (a simple, hollow pipe) with a blende of an oxygen sensor. As a result, exhaust gases will be easier to leave the combustion chamber, and this has a positive effect on the throttle response and engine power.

As for carburetor engines, a Solex carburetor is installed here. According to reviews, it is more reliable than DAAZ, Pekar and other Soviet units. But it still requires periodic adjustment. Today, there are fewer and fewer specialists who know how to properly configure it. If we talk about operational characteristics, the Niva-2131 injector turns out to be more high-torque and economical. In the city, this car spends up to 12 liters of gasoline, while on an adjusted Niva carburetor it spends at least 13. On the highway, an injection car consumes 10 liters. With a carburetor - one liter more.

Which motor is better to choose? As practice has shown, it is much more profitable to buy an injection engine. This system is more reliable and unpretentious in maintenance. There are no special requirements for fuel quality. As practice has shown, the engine "digests" easily the 92nd gasoline.

In addition to the backlash, the steering wheel was still quite heavy. On "Urban" this problem is solved. The machine is regularly equipped with a hydraulic booster. But still the driver has to taxi while driving.

Permeability

The car, regardless of the configuration, has all-wheel drive and a transfer case. These two factors make it easy to use the Niva off-road. The car, even on factory tires, is able to overcome a ford, a dirt road or a sandy road. Relative to the UAZ, the five-door Niva is lighter, so putting such acar is very difficult. Also "Niva" has a huge potential for tuning. There are many ready-made kits of power bumpers, winches, arch extensions, mud tires and roof racks.

In terms of cross-country ability, the Niva is not inferior to him (even a five-door one). But in terms of comfort and driving performance, UAZ noticeably loses. Chinese SUVs should not be taken into account, since they are much more expensive and also not of high build quality. "Niva" is a universal car that is suitable for both trips to nature and city driving.
