With the development of the Soviet Union, freight transport also gradually developed, since it was an integral part of the system for transporting various goods (stay materials, food, and so on). The engineers of the Moscow ZIL plant were given the task of creating a new heavy-duty vehicle capable of lifting and transporting loads weighing 8 tons, and at the same time it was necessary to take into account the uniform axial load on the road.
Thus, the legendary three-axle car ZIL 133 was born. It was produced in two types: a ZIL VYa truck tractor and a ZIL GYa flatbed truck. First of all, they were intended for operation on highways, allowing an axle load of 10 tons. Also, these trucks easily overcame dirt roads. For their original appearance among the people, they received the nickname "crocodile".
New three-axle truck models were created on the basis of the ZIL 133 G1, which has been produced since the mid-70syears of the last century. Despite this, the cars of the GYA series were far superior to the ZIL G1 in terms of technical characteristics.
The cars were equipped with a KAMAZ 740 diesel engine with a capacity of 210 horsepower. This engine was specially designed for the ZIL 133 GYA truck.
In Soviet times, these trucks were the real kings of the roads on a par with five-hundredth MAZs and powerful KAMAZs. Now these ZILs are rare, but at their sight there is a real sensation among passers-by, because it’s not every day that you meet such a miracle of technology.
The truck is equipped with a metal cab with three seats. Refrigerators, airborne and isothermal vans left the assembly line one after another. And all of them were intended for interregional and international cargo transportation.
A few words about tilt vans
This modification of the ZIL GYA was the most popular and in demand in those days (however, as now). The cargo platform was a metal base, wooden sides, as well as a removable frame and awning. In order to transport goods weighing from 8 tons, it was not necessary to call a tractor - it was enough to attach a GKB brand semi-trailer to the van. According to its technical data, such a road train completely replaced the tractor.
ZIL tractor
Of course, the road train described above was not suitable for transporting oversized cargo (for example, 12-meter rails and pipes). The ZIL VYa tractor did an excellent job with this task. It could be equipped with various trailers: "Odaz","Maz", "Nefaz", etc. Thanks to this, the tractor has become more versatile. To transport, for example, rolled metal, it was enough to attach an onboard platform, and a refrigerated trailer was suitable for transporting food. And in order to quickly deliver goods over rough terrain and just wet roads, the developers have provided a differential lock function, which is controlled by a special pneumatic chamber.
It should be said that both cars are designed to operate at extreme temperatures: from +40 to -40 degrees Celsius.
