VAZ-2114, ignition lock: troubleshooting methods and installing a new device

It is impossible to start the engine, its systems, as well as other important devices and mechanisms in cars of the Samara family without an ignition lock. Those car owners who have had to deal with a malfunction of this device know what an unexpected failure of it can lead to. Especially if it happens on the road.

Later in the article we will talk about what the VAZ-2114 ignition switch is, consider its main malfunctions and how to fix them. In addition, we will try to figure out how to replace it ourselves and connect it correctly.

Where is the ignition lock on the "fourteenth"

In VAZ-2114 cars, unlike the "classics", the ignition switch is located not on the dashboard, but on the right, on the steering column. From above, it is closed with a plastic casing, so only the upper part of the “larva” is visible to our eyes.

The VAZ-2114 ignition switch consists of five main parts:

• steel case;
• lock mechanism;
• locking device;
• contact group;
• key.

The device is placed in a steel case, which is designed to protect it from hacking. As for the locking mechanism, it is practically no different from the usual door lock for us.

The locking device allows you to block the steering shaft in the absence of a key. In such a simple way, it protects the car from theft. The contact group is an element that is responsible for starting the engine and its systems. The VAZ-2114 ignition key is used to unlock the locking device and actuate the contact group. Without it, it is impossible to start the engine without disassembling the device.

Working principle

The lock works as follows. When the key is placed in the well, its locking mechanism is deactivated. This happens due to the reverse movement of a special rod. By turning the key to the first position, you will power the "15" and "30" contacts. This will enable (but not enable) the following items:

• ignition system;
• headlight bulbs;
• outdoor warning lights;
• dashboard electrical equipment;
• windshield wipers and washer;
• cigarette lighter;
• rear window defroster;
• generator excitation winding.

If, in a VAZ-2114 car, the ignition switch is moved to the second position, in addition to the listed equipment, the starter will start. As you can see, a lot depends on the he alth of the device in question.

Signs of malfunction

What are the symptoms of the releasedbroken ignition switch? To begin with, its malfunction can be both mechanical and electrical in nature. In the first case it is:

• jamming the lock in one of the positions;
• unable to unlock steering shaft;
• turning on the ignition with a "non-native" key or other object.

When the lock is malfunctioning, which is electrical in nature, you may notice the following symptoms:

• warning lights on the instrument panel do not light up or light up and go out intermittently;
• starter does not start;
• some or all electrical appliances that are powered by the ignition switch (cigarette lighter, headlights, washer, wipers, etc.) do not work.

Why does the ignition switch fail

Jamming of the device is possible due to wear of the "larva" itself or due to problems with the contact group. Faced with a similar problem, do not use force to turn the key in the right direction! There is no need to “tear” the steering wheel if it is impossible to unlock it. It is better to carefully disassemble the lock and find out what is the reason. But more on that later.

Noticing that the ignition in the car can be turned on with any key or a foreign object, hurry up to replace the "larva" or the entire device. So you protect your car from possible theft.

If the ignition switch on the VAZ-2114 car works normally, but when it is turned, the instrument panel does not light up, the starter does not start, do not workelectrical appliances, which means that the contact group is most likely out of order. A similar problem may occur due to its natural wear and tear. Contacts after some time are erased, which leads to an open circuit. It is also possible that they burn, caused by power surges, constant overloads, due to the use of additional electrical appliances and their incorrect connection.

Important: if you want to install additional electrical equipment in your car, connect it to the on-board network only through a relay!

Is it possible to check the contact group with my own hands

Diagnosis of the contact group is to measure the resistance value between certain terminals on the block of the device wiring harness.

To check it you need:

1. Remove the plastic cover of the steering column (to do this, unscrew the three screws).
2. Disconnect the wires of the ignition lock VAZ-2114 (remove the block from the socket).
3. Turn on the ohmmeter (if you have a multimeter, set it to resistance measurement mode).
4. Connect the probes of the device (polarity does not matter) to pins "4" (upper right) and "7" (second from bottom right), corresponding to pins "15" and "30".
5. Turn the ignition switch to the first position.
6. Take ohmmeter readings.
7. Turn off the ignition, connect the probes of the device to terminals "3" (second from the top right) and "7", corresponding to contacts "50" and "30".
8. Turn the lock to the second position.
9. Measure the resistance between the leads.

If the ignition lock VAZ-2114 (injector) is working, the resistance between the contacts will be zero. Otherwise, most likely, the contact group of the device has become unusable.

Repair or change

What to do if the ignition switch is faulty? You can, of course, try to restore it. But this is only if you have some experience in this area, the device is relatively new, and you suspect that contact wear is to blame. Otherwise, it is better to replace the lock assembly. Fortunately, it is not so expensive - no more than a thousand rubles, and this procedure will not take much time.

Which lock to choose

If you are going to replace the ignition switch, do not be too lazy to choose it correctly. The part number for the "fourteenths" is 2114-3704010. But other modifications are also suitable, for example, for the ninth model of Samara - 2109-3704010 or for the VAZ-2110 - 2110-3704005. In principle, they are all interchangeable, it is only important that the device is of good quality and can last as long as possible.

Remove the ignition lock

Before you change the ignition switch on the VAZ-2114, make sure that you have the necessary tools at hand. You will need:

• phillips screwdriver;
• wrench on "10";
• small hammer;
• sharp chisel;
• pliers.

And now let's figure out how to remove the ignition switch on the VAZ-2114. Orderaction is as follows:

1. De-energize the on-board network by removing the "negative" terminal from the battery (to do this, release the bolt on the terminal with the key to "10").
2. Remove the plastic casing of the steering column by unscrewing the three screws securing it.
3. For convenience, you can also dismantle the steering wheel with switches, but you can do without it.
4. Disconnect the wire block of the emergency stop button.
5. Disconnect the ignition block.
6. Inspect the lock bolts. If you are replacing a lock for the first time, you may be surprised because they do not have heads. This is such a kind of full-time anti-theft concept.
7. Using a chisel and a hammer, loosen these bolts and unscrew them with pliers.
8. Remove the lock bracket.
9. Dismantle the device.

Installation and connection of the ignition lock VAZ -2114

The algorithm for installing the lock and connecting it to the on-board network is as follows:

1. Insert the key into the well and turn it to the first position. This will hide the rod blocking the steering shaft.
2. Install a new lock on the column by throwing a bracket.
3. Tighten the bolts of the lock, but not completely. You may still need to adjust the position of the device.
4. Checking the operation of the locking device. To do this, we take out the key from the "larva", tugging it to the sides. The steering wheel should be locked. If there is no blocking, adjust the position of the lock relative to the steering shaft. The rod should fit easily into the groove on the steering shaft.
5. After that, insert the key, turn it to the first position. The steering wheel should unlock. We check several times, making sure that the device is working properly.
6. Now you can tighten the lock bolts. We twist until their heads fall off.
7. Connect the ignition switch harness block.
8. Connect the wires of the alarm button.
9. Connect the "negative" terminal to the battery. We check the operation of the device in all possible modes.
10. Install the plastic casing on the steering column.

Replacing the contact group

If you still decide to save money and not buy a whole lock, the best solution with a working "larva" would be to replace the contact group. It is produced as follows:

1. Having dismantled the ignition lock, from the end of its body we remove the retaining ring that holds the core of the device.
2. Remove the contact group from the case.
3. Install the new part in place of the old one. In this case, the position of contacts "15" and "30" must correspond to the position of the rod locking the steering shaft.
4. Note that the wide tab of the contact group fits into the wide groove on the housing.
5. Install and check the device in the order described above.
