The YaMZ-238 diesel engine (Yaroslavl Motor Plant) is installed on many commercial vehicles, including MAZ and KAMAZ heavy tractors. This motor model has earned wide recognition from drivers, and all thanks to its high torque and reliable operation. But still, the engine, like many other units, sooner or later will require repair. In this article, we will consider the process of preparing the YaMZ-238 motor for repair.

It should be remembered that before the unit enters a special site, it must be thoroughly washed. And only after all its components are devoid of all traces of dust and dirt, you can proceed to the next steps.

Each YaMZ-238 repair operation must be performed with special tools and devices that must be used for a particular type of work. For example, the extraction of ball bearings, bushings and rollers must be carried out on a specific puller. If there is no such device, dismantle the datadetails can be done using mandrels. In no case should you hit a part with a hammer in the hope that it will come off. Of course, this motor, although it seems huge and massive at first glance, but actions using a sledgehammer and similar tools can lead to the most unpleasant consequences, including the overhaul of the YaMZ-238 engine.

The characteristic of all paired parts is such that when one of them is removed, the unit will no longer work properly. Therefore, when repairing, one should not confuse the location of paired spare parts, and even worse - forget about their installation. And spare parts such as booster pump rods and bushings, high pressure fuel pump camshaft, injector needles and many others belong to this category.

One of the main stages of preparing the internal combustion engine for overhaul is its removal from the car. This process does not like mistakes, so everything you need is the part as indicated in the truck manual. It is worth adding here that the removal of the motor is best done using 4 steel hooks. And this is done as follows - these parts cling to four eyebolts, and with the help of a chain and a winch (or other equipment with a lifting mechanism), the entire unit rises.

Also, before starting repair work, you should take care of a temporary place for storing the engine. It is desirable that the YaMZ-238 be installed on some kind of stand, while not forgetting about the pallet, which is also vulnerable to damage.

And finallybrief instructions on how to disassemble this unit:

1. 

   Carefully unscrew the bolts on the clutch housing (it is important not to damage the transmission drive shaft).

2. Remove the nuts on the clutch cover and dismantle the pressure plate.
3. We take out the front and middle discs (for YaMZ motors of modifications 238-K), as well as the driven one (for all other motor models).
4. Remove the starter from the mounts (there are 2 coupling bolts), the air brake generator, its compressor, and the fan impeller.
5. Remove the air filter and four side plugs.
