Hood soundproofing is very important, but it is far from the main task aimed at reducing noise in the car. It should be preceded by a series of works to improve the technical condition of the engine itself, some body parts and suspension.

For many car owners (especially with diesel engines), do-it-yourself hood soundproofing seems like a trifling matter that can increase their prestige and self-respect. However, often even the use of expensive insulating materials does not give any results. Therefore, it will be much more prudent to first find out where extraneous noises come from. Experts say that noise can cause wear on the fuel pump, gearbox, engine mount, chains or tensioners (if the car has them).

In this regard, it should be noted that diesel automotive equipment costs a lot of money, and car owners recklessly use inappropriate tractor or truck diesel fuel, "killing" the engine with it. When measuring the noise level of a dieselengine, already "killed" by half with such barbaric fuel (even with the interior windows closed), the noise level at the windshield is an average of 100 dB. It has also been found in practice that properly done hood insulation (without fixing engine problems) can reduce noise by up to 95 dB, suppressing some sound frequencies, but the overall noise level will not change.

First of all, this is because the noise of a running engine occurs when the fuel pump, cylinders, and also in the presence of vibration and exhaust. It will penetrate into the cabin through cracks and holes, including those in the glazing. That's why it's important to first inspect the entire engine bay and seal any gaps leading into the cabin.

The sound insulation of the hood will not work if there is a play between it and the windshield, which produces a sound similar to the singing of a cricket. Hearing it, some believe that this is a sign of a broken shock absorber. Such play is often found in brand new cars. To reveal it, you need to close the hood and pull its curtains at the windshield.

It is also important to examine the condition of the sealing rubber in the car doors. If there is no complete sealing, then this is another source of noise not only from the engine, but also from the wheels and air currents. It is very important to pay attention to the insulation of the gaps between the doors and the pillars. If not eliminatedthese factors, then the soundproofing of the car hood will not give the expected effect, and money and time will be wasted.

Only after completing these works, you can begin to isolate the hood cover. First you need to glue a vibration-proof material between its stiffeners, such as, for example, Vibroplast or SGM Vibro M2F. Not all cars have stiffeners, so in many cases it is recommended to apply SGM Vibro M2F to the hood (as a more efficient and lightweight insulating material). The soundproofing of the hood ends with the laying of the main soundproofing material, such as Isoton LM15 or Accent 10 LMKS produced in Belarus.
