In 1981, the Renault 9 was awarded the Car of the Year title. Its presentation took place in September of the same year. Moreover, it was accompanied by a large advertising campaign, which made this event well-known.

General description of the model or quick takeoff

Renault 9 became the first European car with a small engine. Many of its parts were made of plastic, which was a complete surprise at that time. In addition, the model was produced in a large number of trim levels. There were fourteen of them in all. All this together could not go unnoticed by motorists.

The car was close to becoming a bestseller. Could, but didn't. This was prevented by the appearance on the market of small cars from Japan. In design and functionality, Renault 9 was clearly inferior to Japanese competitors. If at the beginning of the decade a body shape with straight, clear lines seemed an innovation, by the end of the eighties it was already considered obsolete.

Striving to stay in the market

By 1989, Renault 9 no longer met the requirements of our time. He lost both in appearance and in terms of energy consumption. But the company's management, together with its designers and designers, sought to stay afloat. Their attempts resulted in a large number of modifications.

For five years (from 1982 to 1987) a large number of cars were sold in America. Only there this car was known as "AMS Alliance". Models intended for export to America differed in appearance. They installed more powerful bumpers and lighting equipment with four headlights (this was required by the country's legislation).

Cars destined for the European market were changed just two years after the start of production. The optics and grille covering the radiator were the first to be replaced. It was at this time that four-headlight fixtures were installed on more expensive models, as well as options with an automatic transmission. They were complemented by a new grille. These elements were taken from Renault 11.

Changed over time and salon. For starters, more comfortable seats with headrests were installed. The instrument panel has been modernized. It has become more functional, it has a wide variety of buttons, indicators and adjustments. It can be compared with panels from Nissan cars of the same years.

Specifications for sedans

The first models, which appeared in 1981, were equipped with power units of 1, 1 and 1,4 liters. In the first case, there was only one option with a capacity of 48 horsepower. In the second case, the engine power could be 60, 68 or 72 horsepower. All engine options could be combined with a manual or automatic transmission.

In 1982, the Renault 9 (diesel) appeared with a volume of 1.6 liters and a capacity of fifty-five horsepower. The release of this modification continued until 1988.

In 1984, the lineup was replenished with modifications with new versions of engines. 1.4-liter engine with a capacity of one hundred and five horsepower was equipped with a manual transmission. It was a carbureted turbocharged engine. In the same year, modifications with a large engine capacity appeared. These were modifications of 1.7 liters with a capacity of eighty horsepower, paired with a manual or automatic transmission.

Later, 1.7-liter Renault 9 modifications appeared. Their engine had a power of between seventy-three and ninety-four horsepower.

The steering of all modifications is very sensitive. According to the owners, it is better not to jerk the steering wheel again.

Rear shock absorbers are the “disease” of these cars. Therefore, you should not carry four passengers at once and load the trunk. And, by the way, it is quite roomy. Its volume is four hundred liters.
