Mercedes-Benz is one of the few companies whose products combine both fashionable luxury and old-fashioned utility. The clearest example of the latter is the legendary G-class SUV. This machine was originally created for the army, but it was quickly appreciated by civilian buyers. And gradually the Gelik turned into a status and very expensive vehicle. But what is surprising, despite the fact that the main audience of the car is very we althy people who almost never drive off-road, the Gelendvagen has not lost its off-road essence.
The car has long been perceived as a toy for rich people, but it is still willingly bought by the armed forces of various states (of course, in special army versions). This state of affairs clearly betrays the unique position of the G-Class in the modern automotive industry. Moreover, this unique car has even more amazing modifications, the most unusual of which are 6-wheeled Gelendvagens.
Leotard's Machines
Firstthe person who created the 6-wheeled Gelendvagen is Christian Leotard. This Frenchman was a big fan of both six-wheeled SUVs and the Mercedes brand. He combined his two loves into one and began to create 6-wheeled Gelendvagens in an artisanal way. The cars had different body options, and almost every one was unique. These "heliks" had both all-wheel drive on all six wheels, and a variant where only one of the two rear axles was leading, that is, the wheel formula was 6x4. A variety of Leotara's cars were united only by utility and the desire for maximum cross-country ability, and not comfort.
His 6-wheeled Gelendvagens even participated in the Paris-Dakar rally, where they proved to be quite worthy.
First Suites
A completely different approach to the creation of six-wheelers was used by the German auto-tuning studio Schulz. It worked with very we althy customers whose main requirements were fashionable luxury and exclusivity of the car, and not its off-road qualities. The atelier, for example, produced a 6-wheeled Mercedes Gelendvagen with a convertible body, designed specifically for falconry and having a special chair on a raised platform in the center of the car. Also, several closed six-wheelers were produced according to this type, having all the options of the most expensive limousines inside.
In the series
But the most interesting thing in the history of Mercedes six-wheelers happened already in the new century. Since 2011, the concern has been producing 6-wheeled pickup trucks for the Australianarmies based on the conventional G320 CDI. And in 2013, it was announced the creation of a civilian luxury version, which became one of the most expensive cars of the company. The development was taken up by the AMG division, which traditionally produces improved versions of Mercedes. So the G 63 AMG 6x6 was born. Looking at the photo of the 6-wheeled Gelendvagen, it is difficult to immediately understand whether it is an off-road or executive car. This is what makes the car so special: it retained all the off-road virtues of the military version, such as five locking differentials and huge ground clearance, but complemented it with a mighty 536-horsepower engine and expensive interior equipment. The result was an ideal car for we althy buyers.
Giant pickup, standing on 37-inch wheels, is able to conquer almost any obstacle and at the same time very effectively stands out in the stream of cars, not going unnoticed even among the most powerful sports cars.
From Brabus
However, even this insanely expensive car has been redesigned to make it even more exclusive. Tuning studio Brabus has created its own version of the G 63 AMG 6x6. In the photo of the 6-wheel Gelendvagen from Brabus, the deliberate aggressiveness of the car is clearly visible. This is facilitated by wheel arches made of red carbon fiber and trimmed with the same hood. The bright red interior of the car is also made in a deliberately sporty style.
But such a bold appearance is justified. Atelier mechanics brought the pickup engine power to 700 "horses", and the torqueis an incredible 960 Nm. This allows a four-ton pickup truck to start from a place no slower than full-fledged sports cars.
Homemade 6x6
Inspired by the example of the serial G 63 AMG 6x6, Ukrainian craftsmen from Zhitomir have recently created their own version of the 6-wheeled Gelendvagen. The car was made on the basis of the most utilitarian of civilian "heliks" - Mercedes G Professional. The body of the jeep was cut off and the frame lengthened. Like the AMG version, the pickup gets 37-inch tires, which in this case are mounted on axles from a Volvo C303 Laplander. The Ukrainian version, of course, looks somewhat more modest than the G 63 AMG 6x6, but it is a genuine exclusive and is in no way inferior in off-road qualities.
Recently, a new generation of the G-class has been released, which, having become more modern, fully retained the spirit of its predecessor. This means that advanced versions will definitely appear on the basis of the new Gelendvagens, among which there can be no place for six-wheelers. Therefore, the history of the 6-wheeled Gelendvagen continues …
