VAZ camshaft seals and their replacement
VAZ camshaft seals and their replacement

The camshaft is an integral element of the timing system. This mechanism performs the function of closing and opening the intake and exhaust valves. The operation of the engine directly depends on its condition. The camshaft cams are constantly in operation. They require lubrication to prevent wear. To prevent it from leaving, camshaft seals are used in the design of the engine. In today's article, we will talk about how to determine their malfunction and how to replace them using the example of VAZ cars.

Where is it?

The camshaft oil seal is located behind its pulley. You can see it when removing the pulley.

Usually the element is painted in dark orange color. Made from oil resistant rubber. Soft to the touch. Installed on one side of the shaft.

When should I change?

The manufacturer does not regulate the replacement of this element. Camshaft oil seals can serve both 10 and 100 thousand kilometers. Therefore, we periodically check its condition visually. The main sign that the car needs to replace the camshaft oil seals is oil streaks on it. Deformations and tears occur less often. But in any case, thiselement needs to be changed. Camshaft seals are a consumable item and therefore cannot be repaired. The cost of a new product is about 100-150 rubles.

Why do camshaft seals leak?

This happens for several reasons. The first is pollution in the crankcase ventilation system. The second reason is the clamping of the pipes in this system, or a malfunction of the bypass valve. To extend the life of the oil seal, periodic cleaning of the crankcase ventilation system is required.

If a malfunction is detected, do not postpone the replacement "for later". The camshaft seal will leak, which causes oil to leave the engine. All grease will get on the outside of the motor and other attachments, splashing contacts and sensors. Oil is especially harmful for rubber parts. Therefore, it is so important to keep the engine compartment clean.

First, let's look at how to change this element on classic VAZ models. So, first you need to remove the timing pulley. To do this, you will need to dismantle the chain and alternator belt. The latter is attached to the adjusting bar. We loosen the nut and reset the belt from the generator. Next, we proceed to dismantle the timing chain. We remove the valve cover of the block head, having previously disconnected the crankcase ventilation pipe. Move the metal casing of the air filter to the side. To remove the block cover, you will also need to disconnect the fuel supply hose to the carburetor. Next, unscrew the nuts and remove the cover. On classic modelsVAZ it is fixed on six bolts.

Pay attention to the camshaft pulley. It has marks on it. To avoid problems when installing the element, they need to be combined with each other.

Next, remove the chain tensioner (it is attached to two nuts). When the chain is loose, remove it from the shaft pulley. Next, we remove the pulley itself. This can be done with two minus screwdrivers, after removing the cotter pin. When removing the camshaft seals, you can also “pick up” with a screwdriver.

Proceed to installation

So, the old element has been removed. Now you can start installing the new one. In this case, the oil seal must be treated with engine oil. It is best to touch both edges to the worn element to ensure all-round lubrication. Next, we install the part in place and proceed to the assembly of the timing unit. To do this, we mount the camshaft pulley and chain. Don't forget about the tensioner. Install the valve cover. An important point - the cover is installed on a new gasket. Before installation, it is required to scrape off the remnants of the old from all edges. Additionally, the gasket is treated with silicone red sealant. The bolts are tightened evenly, in several stages according to the scheme “from the center to the edges”.

Further, the replacement of the camshaft seals is accompanied by the installation of a gas ventilation pipe, a fuel hose and an air filter housing. After that, proceed to install the alternator belt. How hard to tighten it? Make sure that the deflection of the belt does not exceed one centimeter when pressed hard.

Howreplace the VAZ camshaft oil seal for newer models?

Now let's consider how this procedure is performed on more modern, front-wheel drive VAZ vehicles with a transverse engine. So, open the hood and set the piston to the TDC position. This is necessary in order to preserve the valve timing marks.

On modern VAZs, a belt is used as a timing drive, not a chain, as on the "classic". Taking it off is a little easier. Plus, there is no need to unscrew the valve cover and all attachments (filter housing and so on). So, we loosen the tensioner and throw it off the pulley. After that, we can unscrew the pulley itself.

Make sure that the shaft key is firmly in place. Next, use a screwdriver to remove the leaking oil seal.

Before installing a new element, carefully inspect the lip of the stuffing box and the sealing spring (attention - marriage is possible).

The surface of the edge must be smooth. As for the spring, it should not be stretched. If all is well, install a new oil seal in place, after lubricating it with oil. Next, using a mandrel, we press it in until it stops.

After that, we collect all the equipment in place. We start the engine and check the tightness of the seal.

Conclusion

So, in this article we found out howindependently replace the camshaft oil seal on VAZ cars of different models. As you can see, the procedure does not require special tools and does not take much time. In addition to the distribution, the engine also has a crankshaft. It is also equipped with seals (and on both sides). Therefore, it is important to monitor their condition. As in our case, the main sign of replacement is a leak. But due to the larger diameter, these seals will "sweat" much more.
