Traditionally, there are two types of applied markup:

1. Vertical road markings.2. Horizontal road markings.

The first is applied to road elements and additional structures intended for road improvement. This marking is carried out using alternating stripes of black and white (with reflective properties). This allows the driver to judge the dimensions of objects in the dark, such as signposts, bridge abutments, overpasses, tunnel entrances and exits, and curbstones.

The second, in turn, is applied directly to the roadway. It performs a large number of important functions, such as dividing traffic flows, indicating the boundaries of the roadway, marking lanes, as well as parking spaces. Roadmarkings of this type are stripes, arrows, inscriptions and symbols, which are made with special reflective paints.

Marking must be carried out strictly in accordance with the current rules of the road and other regulatory documents, such as the "Rules for the application of road markings". At the same time, the application of road markings and all related work must be carried out by appropriately trained personnel and using specialized equipment.

Horizontal road markings can be of two types: permanent and temporary. Permanent markings are made for stationary use and are usually white (individual elements may be yellow). Temporary is applied during repair work for short-term changes in the traffic pattern. This marking is done with orange paint. Its distinctive feature is also that the materials with which it is made are easily dismantled.

Currently, road markings are made from a variety of materials: reflective paints, enamels, thermoplastics and cold plastics, polymer tapes and piece molds. Reflectors are widely used. Nevertheless, all materials used must certainly comply with the regulatory requirements of the relevant documentation, since the service life of road markings will directly depend on quality indicators.
