If the battery is dead

Experienced car enthusiasts are well aware of the importance of a car battery. If the battery is dead, the voltage will be insufficient to start the starter, and instead of a running engine, only a click will be heard when the ignition key is turned and, perhaps, a slight torsion of the starter.

And if someone encounters a similar problem for the first time, then the question arises in the head of how to start the car if the battery is dead. There is an answer to it. There are two main methods - universal (for all types of cars) and specific (for cars with a manual transmission).

Recharging the battery

If the car's battery is dead and there is no need to start it quickly, you can recharge the battery using a charger. To do this, it must be removed from the car and taken home, where it is connected to the charger. If it is possible to connect the charger directly on the street, then you need to disconnect the car cable terminals from the battery, and then connect the charger clamps. It is only necessary to remember that the negative terminal is disconnected first, then the positive, and when connected, first the positive, then the negative. This safety measure must be observed in order not to burn the electrician.

If there is no time or opportunity to charge the battery from the charger, then you can "light" it. The expression "light a car" means recharging a battery from another in a working unit. In this case, you need to find high-voltage wires and a working car. The whole startup procedure is as follows:

- the "donor" car is adjusted as close as possible to the non-working one;

- the wire with red clips is connected to the positive terminals of both batteries, and the wire with black clips connects the negative terminal on the working car with the metal of the non-working engine or, if this is not possible, also with the negative terminal;

- then you should start a working car and let the engine run for 10 minutes;

- turn off the engine of the "donor" car and try to start the car with a dead battery;

- if the car started up, then let it run, if not, but the starter began to turn more vigorously, then repeat the charge;

- then you can remove the high-voltage wires in the following sequence: first black, then red.

Tow or pusher launch

If the battery is dead in a car with a manual transmission, then you can try to start it from a pusher or from a tugboat. In this case, you need to find a few people who could push the car (or a car that could take you in tow). The sequence of actions is as follows:

- it is necessary to set the gear lever to neutral position, and turn the key in the ignition lock;

- then start towing the vehicle;

- after accelerating the car to 20 km / h, squeeze the clutch and shift the lever to third gear;

- the next action should be a smooth release of the clutch pedal and gas, after which the car in which the battery has sat down should start;

- stop and, without turning off the ignition, let the engine run.

These are the ways to start cars with a dead battery, there are. But it is better not to bring them to such a state, but to service the batteries in a timely manner, replace them when they get old and check the car before parking to turn off all current consumers, especially headlights.
