Every driver knows that a car muffler is a necessary and important part of any type of vehicle. During the operation of the engine, fuel combustion and exhaust gases occur. To do this, cars use a special pipe system that goes from the engine to the end of the body. One of the significant elements of this design is the muffler resonator.

The design is presented in the form of the following components:

  • exhaust manifold,
  • reception pipe,
  • catalyst afterburning combustion products,
  • silencer resonator,
  • muffler.

When an unpleasant "growl" appears, the car owner should check for serviceability each component part of this system. It should also be noted that with a large burn-out of the muffler, the exhaust sound also increases.

Thus, the muffler is responsible for reducing the sound of the exhaust, and it also prevents the formation of a large resistance in relation to the exhaust gas outlet. Otherwise, the cylinders will begin to fill, which will eventually lead to a loss of power and incompletecombustion.

Types of muffler

  1. Resonator type muffler. This device makes use of enclosed spaces located near the pipe and attached to it by existing holes. Usually in one such building two departments of different volume are concentrated. These spaces are also divided among themselves. Thus, each such hole is a silencer resonator, which contributes to the excitation of oscillations of its frequency. This frequency is rapidly extinguished as it propagates. That is why such a silencer device is used as a preliminary element, occupying the first position in the entire exhaust system. In addition, the muffler resonator does not offer much resistance to the resulting flow, due to which the cross section does not decrease.

  3. Reflectors. The muffler housing contains acoustic mirrors that reflect sound waves. If using these mirrors to create a certain labyrinth, then a faint sound will be heard at the exit.
  4. The pistol silencer is designed in a similar way. However, this muffler design is considered more perfect. Usually this element is used as the end element.
  5. Absorber. This device absorbs acoustic vibrations using any porous material. For example, if you direct sound into mineral wool, then its fibers will vibrate. In the process of friction, sound vibrations are converted into heat. This principle of operation allows, without reducing the cross section of the pipelineperform the entire design of the gas exhaust system. And despite the fact that the muffler resonator is not used here, flow resistance and noise reduction will be minimal. It is for this reason that factory mufflers are most often used in combination systems, due to which there is a significant reduction in noise with minimal flow resistance.
