Description

The UMZ-417 motor has an aluminum cylinder head and housing. Cast iron sleeves are seated in the block by means of rubber o-rings. This design refers to the negative moments of the engine, as it reduces its strength.

The power unit under consideration is an improved version of the UMZ-4141, has a similar configuration with the ZMZ-402 motor. Differences of UMP-417 from its predecessor:

  • Enhanced compression.
  • Different type of camshaft.
  • The presence of enlarged intake valves.
  • Increased compression ratio.

Some modifications of this engine are equipped with a 421-series crankshaft installed without oil seals. The motor is distinguished from the ZMZ only by cylinder liners, which are placed using copper gaskets that provide additionalaggregate strength.

Modifications

Several variations of the engine in question have been developed. The most popular among them are the following modifications:

  • UMZ-417.10. This engine runs on AI-76 fuel and was installed on UAZ vehicles under the index 3151.
  • Version 4175.10 - mounted on GAZelles, has increased power ratings up to 98 horsepower. The engine compression is 8.2, which is enough to use gasoline with an octane rating of 92.
  • Modification 4178.10 - is considered the most common model, equipped with a carburetor with a pair of chambers, allows you to operate the cylinder head from the 421st UAZ. In addition, the crankshaft of this model is equipped with an oil seal, and additional interaction is allowed with a hydraulic power steering or a diaphragm clutch assembly.

The cost of such a rework is not always justified, since it is easier to purchase a new engine with distributed injection.

  • Balancing the cylinder-piston assembly.
  • By milling the block head to 95 millimeters, compression is increased to 9.2.
  • Changeexisting standard camshaft to an analog with a narrow-phase profile.
  • Machining exhaust strokes up to 39 mm with the installation of suitable timing valves.
  • Installing the exhaust manifold from the 421st model.
  • Replacing the exhaust pipe with a 51 mm version.

These manipulations will increase the power of the power unit up to 100 horsepower.

The repair of the motor in question is divided into current and major repairs. In the first case, the performance of individual parts is restored or replaced. When carrying out repair work, you need to remember about the standard gaps and timing tension. Do not forget to put marks in the places of subsequent installation of still suitable spare parts.

It is worth noting that reducing the control dimensions is also unacceptable, since it leads to a deterioration in the heat transfer of pistons and bushings. This results in excessive overheating.
