The center differential is the most effective way to increase the flotation of any vehicle. At the moment, almost all SUVs, including some crossovers, are equipped with this element. Like all other technical mechanisms, the center differential has its pros and cons. In this article, we will try to find out how effectively this element can be used, as well as what its principle of operation is.

The principle of operation and properties of the mechanism

At the moment, any modern center differential (Niva 2121, for example, is also equipped with it) operates in several modes:

  1. Straight line (automatic).
  2. Slip.
  3. Turns.

The center differential is especially effective when slipping, where it is often used. When the vehicle hits a slippery surface, be it ice, packed snow, ordirt, this element begins to act on the axle, namely the wheels. Its working principle is as follows. When one of the wheels hits a hard surface with good grip, and the second, on the contrary, on, say, a slippery one, the differential begins to transmit the same torque to both disks, that is, this element equates the "scroll" of the two wheels to the same value. This allows the vehicle to get out of a snowy or muddy section of road in seconds.

The same cars that do not have an interaxle differential begin to slip - the left wheel moves at one speed, the right one at a completely different speed. It turns out that the car is even more buried in a snowdrift or sand. Therefore, the center differential (KAMAZ, by the way, is also equipped with it) is an integral part of any vehicle with all-wheel drive. Often, either army trucks or domestic off-road vehicles designed for civilian use are supplied with such an element. For foreign manufacturers, the tradition of equipping their jeeps with a differential is gradually disappearing. This is not so strange - why does the "German" need an interaxle differential if he will never use it in his life! Therefore, among European SUVs, only a few models remain, which are still equipped with this system.

Thus, this part seems to "connect" both wheels, transferring them the same torque from the engine, which gives the car additional traction forslip.

And finally, we note a few rules for the operation of cars and trucks equipped with this part.

  1. In order for the center differential not to vibrate and not make extraneous sounds in operation, the locked element should be set to automatic mode.
  2. In slip mode, do not change the degree of blocking of the element.
  3. When the vehicle needs to be towed, shift the gear lever to neutral and be sure to set the center differential to manual. To do this, lower the DCCD adjusting wheel to its lowest position.
