In translation from English, the word "silent block" (silent) means "quiet". Based on this, you can immediately understand that this part will perform the function of sound dampening. To be more precise, the silent block is designed to reduce or prevent the occurrence of all kinds of noise and vibration in the car's suspension. So, let's take a closer look at this spare part and figure out how silent blocks are replaced.

What is this part?

The silent block consists of a metal hinge, most of which is covered with a rubber material. As a rule, this insert is installed between two bushings (this is the steel hinge). It is this spare part that secures all the parts and assemblies that are in the vehicle's suspension. Timely replacement of rear beam silent blocks guarantees effective damping of various shocks and vibrations that occur when a car hits a pit or other unevenness.

What signals a breakdown?

When this part fails, the driver feels a significant change inthe behavior of the car, its handling and so on. Also, when hitting obstacles, the suspension of the vehicle reacts very badly, there is a sharp rattle and screeching when driving. All this suggests that the car needs an urgent replacement of silent blocks. Otherwise, after several hundred kilometers of operation, the driver will experience uneven tire tread wear, which can even lead to a major suspension repair. Therefore, you should not postpone the replacement for later, because despite the fact that this is a rather primitive part, it performs quite serious functions.

Replacing VAZ silent blocks: brief instructions

So, let's look at the main stages of replacing this spare part using the example of the cars of the Volga Automobile Plant.

The whole process begins with the preparation of tools. To do this, we need three wrenches: 12, 17 and 19 millimeters - and, of course, the silent block itself.

Next, proceed to the repair. To do this, you need to raise the car on a jack or put it on a flyover. We dismantle the wheel, after which we take the key for 17 and unscrew the 2 bolts securing the ball joint with the lower arm. Now we go directly to the silent block. In order to remove it, you must first unscrew the front bolt (the longest one) and loosen the other three, which are located on the back of the part and on the transverse link. To do this, use the keys for 12 and 19 millimeters. We dismantle the lower arm and remove the silent block.

After this process, you can start installing a newspare parts. Silent blocks are replaced in the same place where the old parts were attached. But for this you need to use a lot of force. The fact is that removing an old spare part is not an easy task, since over the entire period of operation it can “stick” to the metal. In order to cope with this, you need to put it on some channel and then knock out the old silent block from the mount with a hammer. And after it is knocked out, you can safely proceed to install a new part. Installation is carried out in the same way as dismantling, only in reverse order.
