The Ford Probe is a joint venture between Mazda and Ford that is identical to the Mazda MX-6. They really have a similar design (because the Ford was based on the Mazda 626 platform) and appearance in general. This car was first seen in 1988, and production ended in 1997.

Design

The Ford Probe was introduced to the public in 1979, long before its launch. But then it was just an aerodynamic concept car. In general, there was a lot of controversy regarding the design. The management of "Mazda" approved the appearance of the car, but the specialists of "Ford" insisted that it was already outdated. They wanted to make it more sporty and aggressive. Therefore, American designers transformed the windshield, removed the frames from the windows on the side doors and made all the necessary changes. And let the management of Mazda be dissatisfied with the fact thatAmerican specialists contributed to the common cause, they had to accept Ford's design proposal. As a result, the look was approved.

True, then there was disagreement about where the model would be produced. Representatives of the Mazda company thought to build their plant in the USA, but Ford already had its own closed free foundry in Michigan. As a result, it was bought by a Japanese concern. The premises were converted into a warehouse, and a modern factory was erected nearby.

First release features

The debut models of the Ford Probe turned out to be sporty and aggressive. These cars successfully combined the interior air conditioning system, as well as cruise control with an on-board computer and full power accessories. As standard, there were still disc brakes (on each wheel), ABS, turbocharged compressor. The LX and GL versions had a stricter body, soft suspension, narrow tires and an automatic transmission. The LX version boasted adjustable seats and steering column, power mirrors and alloy wheels. But all models, without exception, had an electronic instrument panel.

After its release, the Ford Probe faced serious competitors such as the Nissan 200SX, Honda Prelude and Toyota Celica. Nevertheless, he was successful.

Specifications

Now we need to tell you what features the Ford Probe has. To begin with, I would like to point out that thea complete model (known as the GL) cost around $17,600 in 1988. A couple of years later, they carried out a light restyling. Cosmetic improvements slightly transformed the body and added a new power unit. On the LX versions, a 6-cylinder 12-valve V-engine was also installed from now on. Its volume was three liters. A striking feature was electronic fuel injection.

This model featured an advanced ECC-IV motor control system. The power unit produced 140 horsepower. Interestingly, 80% (!) of torque was gained at 1000 rpm - and this is an excellent indicator. Two years later, in 1992, the motor was finalized. It has become a little (by 5 hp) more powerful.

Second Generation

In the 90s, the developers of the Japanese-American concern began to think about what the second generation of the Ford Probe car would be like. The work was in full swing. It was planned by 1993 to present to the attention of the public a completely finished novelty. The same 626 Mazda was used as a platform. Now the developers of "Ford" are engaged in design, and Japanese specialists have begun to improve the chassis and engine. As a result, the novelty has increased by 5 centimeters in length and 10 cm in width. The mass has decreased by as much as 60 kilograms.

The basic version was equipped with a 4-cylinder 2-liter engine. It was a 16-valve, 115-horsepower, solid unit. But a much more powerful engine was installed under the hood of the "charged" version of the GT. It was completed24-valve 2.5-liter V-twin engine producing 164 horsepower.

Unfortunately, when the new Mustang was released in 1994, the Ford Probe, the photo of which is provided above, ceased to be so popular. Manufacturers even wanted to stop producing it. But until 1997, he still existed. And in March of that year, Ford made an official announcement that the model would cease to appear.

Apparently, the manufacturers decided that it was not worth curtailing production so quickly. Therefore, the developers have planned to update the previously published cars. They called it the third generation. It was built on the Mercury Mystique and Ford Contour platforms. In 1998, Ford introduced the brand new Probe to the public as a facelift known as the Mercury Cougar.

The first versions of the Ford Probe were distinguished by 3-spoke steering wheels, spectacular side moldings and bumpers, as well as aluminum rims (spider shaped as an option). The people who became the owners of this model were satisfied with the car, but said that it lacks comfort and modernity. Therefore, in 1990, updated versions were released, in the development of which all the wishes of motorists were taken into account. Models received ABS, automatic transmission, automatic shoulder belts, and a manual transmission switchreplaced with a button to change modes. The cars were also equipped with lighting (mirrors and door lock buttons), a CD player, and rear belts. A leather interior was available as an option.

In 1994, a new automatic transmission for 2-liter engines and an air conditioning system appeared. For 1995, the Ford Probe got better specs with an engine bay heater, 16-inch chrome wheels and new trim.

Overall, this Ford is a great car for people who like the original sporty style, versatile interior and comfortable ride. There are few negative reviews about him, and even then - here, rather, a matter of taste. By the way, you can buy it now. Prices are quite modest - from 80 thousand rubles and up to 200-250 in a used condition. The cost will vary depending on the year of manufacture and configuration. And, of course, from the state. It is very important to pay attention to this when buying.
