Pickup trucks on today's roads are a sight that is very rare to see, which is not surprising, since such models have been replaced by crossovers that combine the qualities of SUVs and family cars. However, the Japanese automaker Mitsubishi is trying to regain the popularity of pickups by introducing the Mitsubishi L200.

What is a Japanese pickup truck?

Russian dealers of the Mitsubishi auto concern are engaged in the implementation of this model, which means that the Japanese company is counting on a certain interest from our motorists. However, there is every reason for this: the fifth generation of the Mitsubishi L200 has undergone significant changes. The pickup has proven itself to be an incredibly reliable vehicle, as evidenced by 51,000 units sold in its 12 years of production.

The updated Mitsubishi L200 is, first of all, a thoroughbred SUV. Many design elements and equipment of the pickup truck were borrowed from the more prestigious model of the same brand - Pajero Sport. Actually, if a car enthusiast wants to get a high-quality SUV, he will have tosacrifice a versatile body, comfort, spring suspension and some functional additions. Despite this, the new generation Mitsubishi L200 is highly likely to win the hearts of buyers.

Packages

The Japanese auto concern offers a pickup truck with two body types and all-wheel drive with a locking rear center differential. Mitsubishi L200 turbodiesel 2.4-liter engine with a capacity of 154 and 181 horsepower.

1. Invite and Invite + worth 1,389,000 and 1,599,990 rubles, respectively. Both versions of the Mitsubishi L200 are equipped with a six-speed automatic transmission and an Easy Select 4WD drive system with a hard-wired front axle. From the photo of the updated Mitsubishi L200, we can say that the designers of the Japanese automaker have reworked and eliminated all the errors of the previous generation of the pickup truck. For example, the number of turns of the steering wheel has been reduced to 3.7, and comfortable seats and adjustable speakers will allow you to comfortably sit in the car. Not the most convenient lever for switching driving modes, installed in the previous generation of the pickup truck, was replaced by a twisting switch. One cannot but rejoice at the fact that the sound insulation has been significantly improved, which is noted by the owners of the Mitsubishi L200 in the reviews: no extraneous noise is heard in the cabin.

Technical

The changes made are especially noticeable when it comes to the technical characteristics of the Mitsubishi L200. The height of the sides of the pickup truck has increased to 475 millimeters, the body and frame have become more rigid.

The suspension has undergone significant changes, becoming more balanced, which provides good handling and driving comfort. Long-stroke design and power consumption remained the samehigh level.

Mitsubishi Heavy Industries worked on the development of a new power unit 4N15 with a volume of 2.4 liters. The engine installed on the L200 is a redesigned version of the engine that was equipped with the Outlander. The Mitsubishi L200 power unit is lighter, due to which the load on the crank mechanism has decreased and, accordingly, the vibration level has decreased. Separately, it is worth noting the aluminum block, variable valve timing, optimized compression ratio, upgraded supercharger with flexible geometry.

The previous generation Mitsubishi L200 was equipped with a Super Select 4WD transmission with a center differential that provides smooth axle locking for 4H mode engagement. Such a transmission reacted to a certain difference in the rotation of the axles. The new generation of the pickup truck is equipped with an updated Torsen automatic locking drive system with 40:60 ratios, where the advantage is given to the rear axle. However, the manufacturer retained the functions of the transition to a lower row and the forced block of the center.

Conquest of water expanses

An updated version of the pickup truck can conquer the water surface: the maximum allowable immersion depth was 700 millimeters. It was possible to achieve such indicators by making changes to the design of the car: the gearbox was moved, the lowest point of "risk" rose by 914 millimeters. The pickup was also fitted with a new timing chain and air intakes.

Test drive on the tracks

Drivers in the reviews of the Mitsubishi L200 note that when driving on an asph alt roadway, even without an extra load on the pickup truck, there is a rather strong shaking in the back row of seats. For normal road conditions, the suspension of the car is not particularly suitable: at speeds up to 70-80 km / h, all small bumps and pits are transferred to the passenger compartment, when this speed threshold is exceeded, the body begins to sway and shake noticeably.

However, despite such shortcomings, the new generation of Mitsubishi L200 is much better than the previous one: the engine runs confidently and is notable for good dynamics.

Perfect SUV

The new L200 pickup is much more interesting to conquer off-road than good tracks. The suspension of the car was created specifically for such conditions: it perfectly withstands all shocks and heavy loads. Mitsubishi feels very confident even on the most difficult and difficult sections of the road.

None of the available pickup packages includes a rear bumper: the design can only be supplemented with an underrun bar. Versions with automatic transmission are equipped with a dynamic damper with which there are no problems: it does not interfere at all when driving on rough roads.

Mitsubishi's proprietary system with automatic descent from hills could not fail to please car owners: just set the initial gear, lower row and release the pedals - the pickup will easily roll down the hill.

Results

Compared to the previous generation, the new generation Mitsubishi L200 turned out much better: the pickup became more comfortable and got better technical settings. The L200 has very few competitors, especially in the Russian car market. The powertrain and fuel consumption have been optimized, as have the automatic and manual transmissions. For a pickup truck, even a price increase will not be so scary.

However, there are some weaknesses. Firstly, the car does not behave very confidently on ordinary roads, respectively, it will not be easy in the city. Secondly, European SUV models significantly bypass the L200 pickup in terms of equipment, but the manufacturer promised to solve this problem in the near future. Thirdly, outwardly, the basic equipment does not attract attention and looks very tasteless, which is why motorists will have to immediately purchase a more expensive version.

It's safe to say that the new generation of the pickup has fully lived up to expectations. The Mitsubishi L200 has been significantly improved in certain parameters, performs well when driving off-road, and does not feature a wide variety of functional additions. Of course, you should not expect much growth in sales and interest in the pickup truck, but fans of Mitsubishi and a certain category of motorists will quite like it.
