Drum brakes - this is the name of the brake system, which consists of a rotating drum. It achieves braking by pressing brake pads against the drum.

Typically, the pads in a system like drum brakes are inside the drum itself. If they are located on the outside of the cast-iron flat disk, then such a mechanism is called a disk mechanism. Drum brakes also come in another variety - band brakes. In such a mechanism, braking is carried out by “covering” the drum with a brake metal flexible tape.

In such a device, which has two working cylinders, work efficiency is increased by rotating the drum when the car is moving. It presses the pads even more during braking. There is no such effect on disc mechanisms, since the disc rotates in a direction that is perpendicular to the direction of the braking force. When the car moves forward, the front block begins to act. It is also called the incoming to the secondary brake pad (otherwise it is called the back).

It is worth listing what the mainelements has a drum brake. These are the pads that do the braking. To do this, they have pads made of friction material. Also in its configuration there is a brake drum, brake and wheel cylinders. The first of these, under the pressure of a special fluid that is in the hydraulic system, comes into action from the brake pedal. All listed parts are mounted on the brake shield (stamped base).

In addition, drum brakes have brake shoe pins (axles), mechanisms that adjust the clearance between the drum and shoes, springs that hold the shoes in place and bring them together after the driver releases the brake pedal.

And, of course, it is impossible not to list the advantages of this mechanism. It is used on trucks (most often) and cars. They can also be used on motorcycles. The main advantage of this mechanism is its power. More precisely, it is extremely easy to increase it by increasing the drum diameter and width. Thanks to this, it is possible to achieve high absolute braking force values, which are necessary to stop and slow down heavy vehicles (buses, trucks). Drum brakes are perfectly protected from water and dust, or rather, from their ingress. Pads on a dirt or dusty road wear out less - this is an excellent quality that makes the mechanism durable. If you use it, then you can greatly simplify the equipment of the vehicle with a parking brake. Besides, such mechanisms do not generate much heat, and due to this, non-hygroscopic brake fluids on an alcohol-oil basis can be used. Rear drum brakes have such advantages. It is worth noting only one drawback - their reaction is slightly slower compared to disk ones.
