Skoda Rapid Spaceback, a subcompact car, was first shown at the 2011 Frankfurt Motor Show as a concept car called the Mission L. The following spring, the concept model became an exhibit at the Beijing Auto Show. And the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, completely ready for mass production, was presented at the Paris Motor Show in September 2012.

The emergence of a new model

Two months later, the first shipments of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback arrived at the disposal of European dealers. And at the beginning of 2013, the new car was offered to buyers in China and Kazakhstan. Deliveries to the Russian market will begin in 2014, when the car will be adapted in the light of Russian specifics. First of all, the ground clearance will be increased and the front suspension will be strengthened, long springs and smoother shock absorbers will be installed. The carrying capacity of the car for the Russian buyer will be increased from 535 to 585 kg, which will also add stability to the car on bad roads. Currently, Skoda Rapid for Russia is produced at a plant in the Czech Mlada Boleslavl. In the future, the car will be produced in NizhnyNovgorod using the facilities of the former GAZ.

Design features

In the lineup of Skoda cars, Skoda Rapid ranks right behind Skoda Fabia in terms of dimensions and general technical characteristics. In addition, some secondary components and mechanisms from Fabia are used in the assembly of Skoda Rapid. In some parameters, the Rapid is identical to the first generation Skoda Octavia, although the new car has a 90 mm longer wheelbase. These extra centimeters were used to increase the space between the front and rear seats. The insufficiency of the zone in which the legs of passengers located in the back seat are located is a weak point of all models of the Skoda family, so the designers are trying to use every opportunity to solve this problem.

Design

The design of the Skoda Rapid Spaceback, whose characteristics allow us to predict further development, has become more rigorous, it no longer has the frivolity inherent in the Fabia model, or the imposingness of the latest Octavia modification. The exterior of Skoda Rapid is an example of composure and restrained elegance of forms. On the example of the "Rapid" model, it is planned to apply a new logo of the "Skoda" company, placing it on the rims, hood and rear door. Currently, Škoda branded models bear only the name of the car and the emblem.

On the issue of Skoda Rapid Spaceback belonging to a certain body type, disputes continue. Strictly speaking,the model can be attributed to the hatchback or liftback type equally, since the slope of the rear door is not pronounced, the rear overhang is not extended, and these are the main signs of a liftback.

For the Skoda Rapid Spaceback hatchback model, the contours of the classic hatchback are also not clearly defined, since the angle of the back of the roof and the tailgate of the car is excessive for a hatchback. It turns out that the body profile does not fully meet either the hatchback or the liftback, but is somewhere in the middle. The Rapid in the Indian version also brings confusion, which is completely created on the basis of the Indian Volkswagen Vento and the Fabia sedan with a front end. The Toledo sedan, which is produced side by side with the Rapid, also claims to have its own exterior. Czech plant Mlada Boleslav and largely repeats its shape.

Security level

Safety Skoda Rapid Spaceback is up to the mark: the car is equipped with ABS systems, there are anti-lock brakes, ESP, directional stability, TRC (traction control). Regular airbags are located around the entire perimeter of the cabin in special niches. Some of the accessories installed in the Skoda Rapid Spaceback are unique and will not be found in the safety kit of other cars. For example, the model is equipped with a scraper to remove ice from the glass, and a four-fold magnifying glass is mounted on its other end. Under the front seats are packs with vests similar to road worker uniforms,embroidered with reflective braids. They can be worn in case of minor repairs to the car on the road.

Equipment

Skoda Rapid Spaceback, which is constantly being improved, is equipped with fog lamps that can change their position and illuminate the sharp turn into which the car must enter. A special system will help the driver when driving uphill, when the car has to start moving after stopping on a steep slope. Many drivers remember how difficult it is to do this: you have to manipulate the handbrake and speed up, and the engine stalls over and over again.

A very useful option is the constant monitoring of tire pressure, and in all wheels at once, including the spare wheel, because both economical driving and safety depend on optimal uniform tire pressure. Constant monitoring of pressure allows you to take action in time and pump up the tires.

Power plant

The Skoda Rapid Spaceback power plant is a choice of 6 engine options: atmospheric gasoline with a volume of 1.2 liters with a capacity of 75 liters. With. There are three more gasoline turbocharged ones with a capacity of 86, 105, 122 hp. With. and two turbodiesels 1, 6 TDI with a capacity of 90 and 105 hp. With. All variants are offered with a five- and six-speed manual transmission. In the future, it is possible to install a DSG. All engines are environmentally friendly and are standardized according to Euro-5. Skoda Rapid vehicles intended for urban use may be equipped with the "Stop &Start".

Chassis and wheels

Wheels are also available in 17", 15" and 14" wheels. Tires - 215/40, 195/55, 185/60, 175/70. The buyer can choose one set of wheels or purchase several if necessary. The Skoda Rapid Spaceback braking system is quite effective, rear drum brakes, self-adjusting, front disc brakes, also with automatic clearance adjustment. Suspension front independent, lever type Pherson, on springs with hydraulic shock absorbers. The rear suspension is semi-independent, spring, with shock absorbers. The steering mechanism is rack-and-pinion, equipped with an electric booster. The turning radius of the machine is 10.2 meters.
