In recent years, sales of station wagons in the CIS countries have fallen markedly. Nevertheless, the Czech company Skoda decided to take a risk and offer an updated Superb model in the body of a liftback and station wagon in our market. Today we will find out how the "Superb" station wagon, or, as the manufacturer calls it, "Superb Combi" will conquer its customers.

Exterior

The previous generation of the Skoda Superb (station wagon) was aimed at an older audience: a solid appearance, soft outlines of the body. Trunk

The distance between the front and rear axles has increased by 80 mm. They completely went into the trunk, the length of which is now 1140 mm. The trunk volume of the Skoda Superb station wagon is as much as 660 liters, which is 27 liters more than the previous generation. Even the new Volkswagen Passat Variant, which is assembled on the same platform as the Superb, has a boot capacity of only 606 liters. Only the Mercedes-Benz E-Class can boast of a larger volume than the Czech station wagon. He wins by only 35 liters. And if you fold the rear seats, then both the Mercedes and the Skoda will get 1950 liters of free space.

The Czechs representing Skoda claim that with the rear seats folded down, an object up to three meters long can be placed in the trunk. What makes life difficult for amateurs to turn their car into a truck is the fact that there is no horizontal plane between the folded backrests and the floor. And without the raised floor, which is offered as an option, yetand there is a height difference. By the way, such a raised floor could be a smuggler's dream: there is a small cache under it. The spare wheel with the tool, as expected, lies one level lower. Another interesting secret: by pulling a segment of the chrome trim, we get a towbar that appears from under the bumper.

The trunk of the "Skoda Superb" (station wagon) is distinguished not only by volume, but also by practicality. There are many hooks here, some of which are folding. Thanks to a special corner, which is attached to the floor with Velcro, you can fix the suitcase. The flashlight can be removed and used as a simple portable flashlight. In addition, it is equipped with a magnet, which allows you to fix it on the body if necessary, for example, when changing a wheel. Rear passengers get even more space. Legroom remained the same, but it was enough. But the interior has grown noticeably in width: 26 mm have increased in the shoulders, and 70 mm in the elbows. Headroom has also increased by 15 mm. Even without resorting to a cheat sheet with numbers, you can see that the back row is spacious, and it will be comfortable for three of us to sit on it, despite the rather high transmission tunnel. The only bad thing is that the rear sofa has a slightly pronounced profile, and the backrests are not adjustable in tilt.

Equipment

Not so often in this class you can find a full-fledged climate control with adjustable airflow temperature and heated rear seats. Well, a household outlet in addition to the cigarette lighter and USB is even less common. Thus, the Skoda Superb station wagon expands the scope of the class to please, of course, the buyer.

As befits a car of this level, the station wagon is equipped with a variety of electronic assistants. All of them do their job, only the system of keeping the car in the aisles of the lane helps only on gentle turns.

"Skoda Superb" station wagon: characteristics

V6 motorsno longer bet on Superb. The range of engines consists exclusively of turbo fours. The youngest of them is 1.4 TSI. This is a fairly quiet motor, devoid of noticeable pickup. However, the 150 horsepower it develops is enough to accelerate a 1.5 ton car to 100 km/h in 9.1 seconds and bring the speedometer to 200 km/h on the autobahn. This motor is even put on the all-wheel drive version of the model, which is even heavier. By the way, the 1.4-liter engine, combined with all-wheel drive, does not try to turn off two cylinders when there is no load. This makes the character of the station wagon more accommodating. The softness of the clutch pedal does not interfere with feeling the moment of grasping. The gear lever is also very soft, it does not resist or click. Therefore, you need to get the hang of it in order to feel if the transmission is on.

Riding modes are switched by one button. There are more than enough of them in Superba: in addition to sporty and comfortable, there are also Normal, Eco and Individual. The latter allows the driver to independently assemble the character of the car from different parameters: steering stiffness, pedal sharpness, suspension softness, and so on.

A car with a top-end 2.0-liter unit that develops 220 horsepower rides better in terms of dynamics, but worse in terms of stability. Apparently, she is not quite prepared for such a powerful motor. The engine reaches the first 100 km/h in 7.1 seconds.

Model "SkodaSuperb "diesel station wagon rides rather sluggishly, because it is designed for economical driving. At the same time, the car makes a lot of noise, which is not at all combined with a rich bundle. In the CIS countries, the emphasis is on gasoline station wagons, despite the fact that the previous generation of the Superba station wagon sold better in the diesel version. In general, the previous version of the car was not implemented so successfully, either as a liftback or as a station wagon.

Competitors

Large station wagons in our market are now found only in the premium class. Ford is no longer bringing the Mondeo station wagon to us, and Volkswagen is also likely to stop selling its elongated Passat here. Thus, from the classic station wagons, only the Hyundai i40 remains. So "Superb" has the opportunity to become a monopoly in the segment of large station wagons in our market.

Ideally, a raised version of the Superba with an off-road body kit would be suitable for our roads. There will definitely be demand for it, even though the price of such a model may rise to the level of a mid-size crossover. The company is working on this idea, but has not yet given official information about the release of a station wagon more adapted to bad roads.
