The problem with clutch slippage on cars that are usually referred to as domestic classics is quite well known. This defect causes not only serious inconvenience in driving, but also entails unplanned financial losses. Clutch slippage leads to a rather rapid failure of the release bearings, wear of the discs and combustion of the entire basket as a whole. This article is intended to answer the questions: why does the clutch slip and what needs to be done in a particular case?
How to identify this defect?
Clutch slip can be easily identified by yourself, without the use of special equipment.
To do this, you must perform the following series of simple steps:
- start engine;
- put into neutral gear;
- apply handbrake;
- press the gas pedal;
- squeeze the clutch;
- shift to first gear;
- release the clutch pedal.
By all rights, as a result of these manipulations, the engine eventuallyshould choke. If this does not happen, the motor continues to work, and even extraneous sounds or a burning smell appear, which means that the clutch is slipping and measures to repair it should be taken immediately. This is not only due to financial reasons, but also for reasons of our own security.
Causes of slipping clutch
There may be several reasons for this effect. As a rule, they arise due to the characteristic driving style, which is commonly called sports. Sharp acceleration and deceleration, frequent gear changes significantly reduce the working life of the clutch, although AvtoVAZ defines it as 75-85 thousand kilometers. In addition, experts argue that the use of trailers can significantly affect the performance of a car's clutch. It is believed that they are able to significantly reduce the life cycle of components and mechanisms of an automotive element. Consider the most common actual causes of clutch slip.
Oil hit
Often, if the clutch slips, the reasons for this lie in the ingress of oil or other technical fluid into the basket. Oil gets on the surface of the release disk, flywheel or lining of the driven disk due to a leak in the crankshaft rear oil seal. Often the cause of the leak is the excess oil level in the gearbox housing. In these cases, if the clutch slips, the VAZ-2107 is repaired very simply. It will be enough to eliminate the cause of leaks and clean those components of the system that have got oil. This can be done usingwhite spirit or gasoline. In the case of liquid getting on the friction linings, they will also have to be cleaned with fine-caliber sandpaper.
Disc pad wear
Friction disc linings tend to wear out over time.
As a rule, this not only slips the clutch, but also significantly reduces the free play of the pedal. In this case, there can be only one way out of this situation - replacing the entire lining or clutch discs. It must be remembered that if only the linings are replaced, then you need to pay careful attention to the condition of the gaskets. If they are damaged or burnt areas, they should also be replaced.
Spring damage
Another reason why the clutch slips can be a failure of the pressure spring.
In this case, the spring is simply not able to create the necessary pressure on the disc. A damaged or worn spring must be replaced with a new one.
No gaps in the shutdown drive
Another fairly common reason why the clutch slips (it's VAZ-2107 or 2105, it doesn't matter) is the incorrect operation of its drive. Most often this is due to the fact that the necessary clearance of the clutch release actuator is simply not available. This problem is easily eliminated by adjusting to the desired values.
Insufficient pedal freeplay
Often the clutch slips (VAZ-2107 often sins with this) and due to the fact that the pedalhas too little free play.
The manufacturer has set the range of values 25 … 35 mm. This indicator is quite simple to measure with a simple ruler and, if necessary, make adjustments.
There are other reasons why the clutch of VAZs of any model slips, and the "seven" in particular.
They are not as common as the ones listed above. But you still need to know about them. In particular, the following faults can be mentioned:
- Friction lining detached. The lining itself may not have visible damage or burnt areas. But as a result of delamination, it ceases to perceive the load with its entire surface, which leads to slippage.
- Overheating of the release plate. As a result of exceeding the temperature values of the maximum possible heat-absorbing characteristics of the clutch disc, its permanent expansion occurs, which causes the effect of slipping. Of course, this defect cannot be installed on the go. But you can easily determine it by the characteristic coating of burning and scale on the disk itself.
This article lists the main reasons why the clutch slips on domestic classics and on many other models of cars and trucks. It is important to remember that, whatever the cause of clutch slippage, it must be eliminated at the first appearance of symptoms of a defect. It is best to entrust such work to highly qualified specialists.
Disassembly, repair and replacement of clutch parts is a rather laborious work and requires rather deep knowledge, extensive experience, as well as the availability of special tools and equipment.
In addition, when doing repairs yourself, there is a high enough risk of violating the correct settings and adjustments, which will turn the replacement of parts into Sisyphean labor. Very soon, the clutch will begin to slip again, make a rattle and crackle, and the smell of overheated discs and linings will be clearly felt in the car.
