In the early 2000s, the Korean automaker Hyundai began to rapidly expand its presence in many global markets. The Russian Federation did not remain deprived of attention either. For the production of Korean cars, a specialized plant was created in the city of Taganrog (Rostov Region). The first model of the plant was the Akcent TagAZ, which was assembled from large units supplied by the Korean side. Such Hyundai cars began to roll off the assembly line in mid-autumn 2001.

General information

The Korean original of the car appeared in the production program in 1999 and was the second generation of the model. The car put into production did not have any cardinal differences from the Korean counterpart. In 2003, the car underwent restyling, as a result of which the appearance and equipment were somewhat changed. It was these cars that began to be assembled in Taganrog according to a full-fledged cycle, which included welding and body painting. A distinctive feature of the car was a multi-link suspension, which was rare for vehicles of this class.

Production went on at an increasing pace until the crisis of 2009. Then the production volumes of cars decreased three times, the plant found itself in a situation of huge debt to banks. The debt restructuring made it possible to postpone the end of the enterprise for several more years. In 2012, TagAZ was declared bankrupt and currently does not exist.

Power units and boxes

All models of TagAZ "Accent" were equipped with gasoline four-cylinder one and a half liter engines built on the basis of one block:

  • 92-horsepower variant with three valves per cylinder. Rare enough.
  • 102-horsepower engine with a classic four-valve gas distribution scheme.

The first version of the engine was only paired with a five-speed manual gearbox. The second option could optionally be equipped with a four-speed automatic.

Basic equipment

A distinctive feature of the Accents configuration of the first two years is the presence of two airbags - for the driver and the passenger sitting next to him. Full-cycle TagAZ "Akcent" was equipped with a single driver's pillow, and even then in the most complete set.

Almost all produced cars were equipped with a microclimate system in the cabin with air conditioning. The system is controlled manually, with the help of regulators on the central part of the instrument panel. Air conditioning was absent on the simplest version, which is practically notproduced.

Optionally, the cars were equipped with electric windows on all doors, electric heating and mirror adjustment. The most expensive versions used anti-lock brakes, which were rare on simple cars in the early 2000s.

"Accent" today

The release of "Accents" stopped in Taganrog in 2012. The last cars were sold in car dealerships at the very beginning of the next year. Despite the end of production of the Hyundai TagAZ Accent model, it remains very popular in the used car market. The reason for this success is the high reliability and long life of the main components. Buyers put up with low ground clearance, which makes the car almost impossible to move on country roads.

Purchasing spare parts for TagAZ Accent is not difficult, since many car components are licensed versions of Mitsubishi units. In addition to original parts, analogues from various companies are widely represented. The production of these components will continue for quite some time, which will allow owners to keep their second generation Accents in technically sound condition.
