The MMZ trailer has been mass-produced since 1972. The device is intended for transportation of various types of cargo and tourist equipment. The base tractor for this unit is the VAZ-2101 car. Both tools have the same components: tires, shock absorbers, bearings. The MMZ trailer can be operated in aggregation with other passenger cars of domestic and foreign production, which are equipped with a standard traction coupling unit.

The MMZ trailer frame is made of steel by welding. It consists of a pair of longitudinal beams and three transverse elements. Spars have a trapezoidal section (50/32/25 mm) and are made of steel. Specifications of MMZ trailers

The body part is made of steel by welding. The bottom and sides are made by stamping from sheet steel (0.7 mm). Inside the body in the area of the side boards are wheel arches. The floor is covered with a rubber corrugated cape. The upper trims of the sides are equipped with slots for mounting awning arches, which are pipes of a certain diameter. The awning itself is made of tarpaulin, fixed on the arcs with a special cord, which is threaded through the eyelets located along the edges of the fabric.

Lacing is carried out between the eyelets, pounces on the strapping hooks that are welded to the sides. The undercarriage of the MMZ trailer consists of the following elements:

• Wheels with VAZ-2101 type tires.
• Tubular axle with pins welded on the edges.
• Transverse and longitudinal rod.
• Spring suspension mechanism.
• Hydraulic shock absorbers of telescopic type.
• Shock absorber fixing brackets.

Package

The MMZ light trailer is equipped with three support legs. They are mounted on the platform to block the suspension springs. The following is one of the ways to upgrade the device in question. The essence of tuning is to dismantle the body and replace all the elements to the maximum. Initially, we mount a new lock, then sandblasting and painting the sides are carried out. The main process includes the following steps:

• Replacing the rubber bands of the rear shock absorber with bushings.
• If these elements are suitable for further use, do not show signs of deformation - they are best left, especially if they were made during the Union.
• As spring mechanisms, you can put analogues from Oka or Zaporozhets (if a constant and maximum load is provided). In the second case, you will need to purchase screedssprings.
• Parts from VAZ-2101, Moskvich or Niva can be used as rear shock absorbers.
• Use 1260mm bolts for fastening.
• The wooden crossbars under the body can be exchanged for a metal profile.

In case of tire friction against the springs, use an additional spacer from the VAZ-2101 brake disc.

Modernization

Car trailers starting at $200 (depending on the condition of the "cart") can be upgraded in yet another way. Work steps:

• Replacing the hitch with a new version.
• The hubs and the handbrake are mounted.
• An ordinary jack can be used to make additional support on the drawbar.
• Next, the headlights are replaced (you can buy new items or use the lights available in stock, for example, from the VAZ-2108).
• The structure is galvanized.
• Further alteration of the MMZ trailer consists in the restoration of the suspension. To do this, we replace the hubs with plates from the VAZ-2108 (from a bent beam).
• The frame is being strengthened.
• The structure is being painted.

Recovery

The repair of the MMZ trailer can be done as follows (the original model was almost parted at the seams):

1. Resuscitation begins with a thorough straightening of the body with the sealing of all cracks by welding. Next, the diagonals are checked, the sides are pulled together with soft rolled wire with further strengthening of the corners. A couple more amplifiers are welded onto the bottom part. This operation is due to the fact that in the standard version the bottom is equipped with only one amplifier, which is not enough for full operation. As a result, the metal is torn, the bottom just falls through.
2. You can weld a new body bottom from improvised means as an additional layer on top of the main element. For this purpose, several pieces of iron 3 mm thick are quite suitable. To begin with, the segments are welded together, and then with the main coating. For reliability, the entire structure is fixed with bolts with press washers.
3. Mount reinforced springs.

After restoration, the MMZ-81024 trailer was subjected to increased loads (transportation of cement, sand, gravel). After 4 months of operation - no complaints, even compared to a new sample.

Negative reviews

Comment given about the standard trailer MMZ-81021. Owners note a small body size of 180160 mm, while inside there are huge niches for wheels. It is not very convenient to carry it, as it opensonly the middle part of the tailgate. The limit of dreams is the transportation of 3-meter boards. There is practically nowhere to place furniture either, due to the same wheel arches.

The frame is weak, it deforms already with a slight overload. The springs are also not very strong, and the short drawbar does not allow for normal reversal. The result - the design is inconvenient, suitable only for transporting fruits and vegetables.

Positive feedback concerns the restored and reinforced trailer. The device was made from a practically “killed” MMZ. It should be noted right away that the cost of restoration was simply miserable.
