This is explained by the fact that portal bridges can significantly increase the ground clearance of the car, which, in fact, is their main function. And due to the fact that several gearboxes are used in the design at once, the transmission of an SUV does not tolerate such heavy loads as the gearbox of a conventional jeep.
It is also worth noting that portal axles, in addition to their special design, have a special gear ratio. Often this value differs from the standard in a more "traction" direction. Thus, the car becomes more suitable for off-road use and less dynamic on asph alt. However, for owners of SUVs, who mostly operate them on dirt roads, the loss of speed is a minor disadvantage.

First of all, as we have already said, portal bridges significantly increase the vehicle's ground clearance. And since the location of the beam between the wheels plays a decisive role, thanks to such an axle, the clearance can be increased by at least 10 centimeters. For example, if a Hunter UAZ car has bridges located at a distance of 21 centimeters from the road surface, then after installing portals, this value increases to 38 cm.
But that's not the only reason motoristsinstall portal bridges. Also, thanks to this device, you can significantly increase the torque, that is, make the SUV more high-torque. Such a vehicle can overcome absolutely any obstacle, even if it is used to carry goods or tow another car. Mud, snow, heat and frost are not an obstacle for such a machine.
