Recently, rare and sometimes unpublished models of domestic cars have become a popular topic for discussion. "Lada" is often mentioned - "Hope", "Karat", "Consul". But few people know that not only AvtoVAZ, but also the Gorky Plant has such examples. In the 2000s, there was an active development of a premium sedan. And this is not about "Siber", but about its progenitor. So, meet - GAZ-3104 "Volga". Description and specifications - later in our article.

Design

After the collapse of the Soviet Union, the plant decided to reduce the cost of production of the Volga. So, the new model 31029 was distinguished by a meager design and did not at all correspond to its former premium status. GAZ-3104 is a completely new car, unlike other models of the Gorky Automobile Plant.

The car has a decent appearance. The exterior design was carried out in collaboration withleading Italian designers. The model received a nice slanted optics from the Hella company, a chrome grille and massive moldings with chrome elements. Also shiny were the door handles and the edging of the side windows. The car is fully consistent with its class. Huge alloy wheels come as standard here.

The rear part was also not like other Volga. Despite its uniqueness, some compared the Volga GAZ-3104 with the British Rover. In particular, this concerned the rear optics.

Dimensions, clearance

The car was an order of magnitude longer than the usual "Volga". So, the size of the body was exactly 5 meters. Width and height - 1.8 and 1.43 meters, respectively. Ground clearance is 16 centimeters.

The inside of the car deserves respect. A lot of work has been done on the interior. Although the design of the instrument panel could be different, not "gazelle" - the reviews note. Nevertheless, sitting inside is quite comfortable and pleasant. There are wood-trimmed stripes around the perimeter, symbolizing the luxury of the cabin. Door cards are equipped with a power window control unit, and also have their own speakers. Instead of a mechanical mirror adjustment knob, there are “tweeters” here. The mirror adjustment itself is now electric. All the necessary buttons are under the left hand of the driver.

The center console contains three air ducts, radio and climate control unit. Despite belonging to the premium class, inside we seemanual transmission knob and fabric interior. In this regard, there are comments from many car owners. On the passenger side there is a spacious glove box. However, its handle is painted black (although it is chrome-plated at the doors). The steering wheel is four-spoke, with a comfortable grip. But it has no control buttons.

GAZ-3104 was the first car in the family to be equipped with airbags. Previously, only belts with pretensioners were installed on the Volga. The 3104 sedan also has air conditioning and full power accessories.

Specifications

Under the hood of the Volga there was a unit from the Zavolzhsky Motor Plant. This engine is familiar to all gazelists - ZMZ-405. The model is a modernized version of the 406th motor. The main difference between the 405th is the presence of an injection injection. In view of this, the inlet has been changed. In particular, a huge cylindrical air filter was placed under the hood. However, if on the GAZelle it was vertical, then on the Volga it was installed horizontally.

Reviews say that the filter housing is quite heavy and massive. The element significantly hides the free space under the hood. This problem was observed in all "Volga" with the 405th gasoline engine.

What other improvements have been made regarding the engine? Work was also carried out to increase the working volume. If earlier it was 2.3 liters, now it is 2.5. This gave an increase in power by 5 percent. Total powerthe unit is 152 horsepower. Torque has increased to 214 Nm. The machine is equipped with a five-speed manual transmission.

What are the dynamics characteristics of GAZ-3104 Volga? Due to the large volume and the upgraded piston group, acceleration to hundreds was 11 and a half seconds. And this despite the fact that the curb weight of the sedan was almost 1800 kilograms. The maximum speed of the Gorky sedan was 190 kilometers per hour.

Chassis

GAZ-3104 has an independent front suspension. It is built on transverse double levers. It was a huge step forward for the Gorky Automobile Plant. After all, earlier the manufacturer practiced only an independent pivot element. A multi-link design was used at the rear.

A distinctive feature of the GAZ-3104 sedan is the presence of all-wheel drive. The braking system has also been improved. Model 3104 was the first of the Volga, which no longer used drum brakes. Now disc mechanisms are installed on both axles (ventilated in front). Additionally, the sedan was equipped with an ABS system from the German company Bosch. As tests at the test site showed, the car has become more maneuverable and sensitive to the steering wheel. Previously, the Volga were distinguished by their sluggishness. The machine successfully completed the tests. Suspension "Volga" is quite energy-intensive.

At the same time, the car has good handling and effective brakes. The anti-lock wheel system is able to prevent the machine from running skidding in the event ofemergency braking. Finally, the domestic "Volga" has become as safe as foreign cars.

GAZ-3104 Volga - price

It should be noted that this model was only a prototype. Like the previous Volga (this is model 3103), the project was not put into practice. However, he served as a huge impetus for the creation of a new generation of cars - the Volga Cyber. This car was mass-produced at the Gorky Automobile Plant from 2007 to 2012. Now such a car can be found on sale for 300-350 thousand rubles. The car was equipped with American Chrysler engines and had a more modernized appearance.
