The dashboard (shield) is a kind of screen, looking at which, the driver receives the necessary information about the operation of a particular car system. Without it, it would be difficult to control speed, mileage, oil pressure or coolant temperature.
In this article we will consider the standard instrument panel of the Chevrolet Niva in the context of its design, information content, and common malfunctions. In addition, we will talk about tuning models of devices installed on these cars.
What is the instrument panel we are considering? "Chevrolet-Niva" is equipped with a shield that meets all modern requirements. It is quite convenient and moderately informative so that the driver, without being distracted from the process of driving the car, has the opportunity to know about all work processes and be able to prevent malfunctions in time.
Location
The Niva-Chevrolet shield has a classic layout. It is shifted to the left and is located on top of the steering column. This position allows the driver to observesensor readings without turning your head to the side while driving.
Design Features
What can the instrument panel tell us? "Chevrolet-Niva" is thought out in such a way that its shield unites all the control devices of the car. It includes:
- speedometer;
- odometer (odometer);
- tachometer (crankshaft revolution counter);
- coolant and ambient temperature gauges;
- fuel gauge;
- 12 control (signal) lamps.
In order for the driver to monitor the readings of the instruments at night, the shield is illuminated when the parking lights are turned on. How bright is the instrument panel illumination? "Chevrolet Niva" has the function of adjusting the level of illumination of the shield. It is provided by six special light bulbs.
Important: the shield has an electronic design, and in case of failure it cannot be repaired! Spare parts in the form of individual panel assemblies are not available for sale. The only exceptions are signal and lighting lamps. In other words, if at least one pointer fails, you will have to buy a shield assembly.
Dashboard plug addresses
The operation of the devices is controlled by an electronic module that receives information from the sensors and sends it to the panel. To connect to it, as well as to other nodes, the shield has two blocks with the following plug addresses:
White block with 13 pins(X-1) | |
1 | Ground (case) |
2 | Tachometer (low voltage input) |
3 | Tachometer (high voltage input) |
4 | + battery (via fuse F-3) |
5 | Coolant temperature sensor |

10 | Terminal "15" of the ignition switch (through fuse F-10) |
11 | Hand brake switch |
12 | Output "D" of the generator |
13 | Oil pressure sensor |
Red block 13 pins (X-2) |

"Niva-Chevrolet": instrument panel, designations
Now consider the "screen" itself. What indicators are united by the instrument panel? "Chevrolet-Niva" in this regard is not original. The largest indicators are the tachometer and speedometer. Their round-shaped scales are located in the center of the shield. The hands of these devices are driven by small individual stepper motors.
Under the tachometer is a liquid crystal screen, which displays information about the ambient temperature, as well as time. At the bottom of the speedometer scale is the same display informing the driver about the total and daily mileage.
To the left of the tachometer is the scale of the coolant temperature sensor, to the right of the speedometer is the fuel gauge intank. Both instruments are of magneto-electric design.
In the lower left corner there are control lamps for the battery discharge indicator, parking brake activation, emergency oil pressure in the engine, as well as one more backup lamp. The lower right corner is occupied by indicators for turning on dimensions, high beam headlights and a low brake fluid level indicator.
At the top between the scales of the tachometer and speedometer are arrows to activate the turn signals (right and left). At the bottom in the center of the shield is the alarm indicator, and below it is the “CHECK” control lamp.
A few words about pilot lamps
Why do we need control lights on the instrument panel? "Chevrolet-Niva" with their help gives the driver signals that a failure has occurred in one of the systems. It looks like this:
- a lamp in the form of an oil can indicates that there is insufficient pressure in the engine lubrication system (may be due to crankcase damage, a malfunction of the oil pump or the sensor itself);
- The battery light turns on when the battery is no longer being charged from the battery (possible failure of the voltage regulator or an open in the generator circuit);
- The lamp in the form of a circle with an exclamation mark inside lights up when the level of brake fluid in the expansion tank drops below normal (it is better not to continue driving until you find out the cause of the fluid leak);
- light bulb in the form of a schematicengine - "CHECK" may indicate the failure of any sensor, violations in the operation of systems and mechanisms (accurate diagnostics are carried out after reading and decoding the error code);
- alarm indicator in the form of a thermometer, located on top of the scale of the coolant temperature meter, lights up if it is heated above the norm (failure of the radiator fan, temperature sensor, thermostat).
Dashboard malfunctions
The dashboard, like any other electronic unit, is exposed to such harmful factors as a short circuit, an open circuit in the power supply or information circuit, a malfunction of one of the main components of the device. If you had to face a similar problem, first of all, determine what signs of breakage the shield gives:
- panel not functioning at all, but engine starts and runs normally;
- Niva-Chevrolet instrument panel does not light up, but all indicators work (no backlight);
- speedometer and tachometer not working;
- temperature and fuel level sensors do not function.
In the first case, most likely, the contact on the connectors of the devices is lost. It is enough to disconnect the pads, clean the contacts, and everything will work again. A similar malfunction can overtake you in the fall or winter, when the level of moisture in the air is high.
If on a Niva-Chevrolet the instrument panel lamps are off, but all of themthe elements are working normally, the reason must be sought in the power wires of the lighting bulbs, or in the lamps themselves.
Failure of the tachometer or speedometer also indicates a break in the power circuit. The same can be said for malfunctions in the fuel level and temperature sensors.
Disassembling the panel
In the event of a malfunction of the shield, in order to determine the causes of the breakdown, it will in any case have to be disassembled. How to remove the instrument panel? "Niva-Chevrolet" in this sense will not cause problems.
This is done as follows:
- With a slotted screwdriver, pry off and remove the two plugs. The first is to the right of the alarm button, and the second is to the far right of the panel overlay.
- Unscrew the screws under the plugs.
- Pull out the right side of the shield lining, remove the connectors from the control buttons. Remember (take a picture) which connectors fit which buttons!
- We disengage the left side of the lining, remove the block from the headlight and dimensions buttons. We remove and remove the lining.
- Unscrew the two screws securing the dashboard. Disconnect connectors.
- Remove the panel.
Reviews on the Chevrolet Niva panel
What can you tell by looking at the described instrument panel? "Chevrolet-Niva", despite the participation of foreign designers in the development of the car, went not far from their relatives. This is a typical VAZ shield, not much differentfrom those that are installed on the new "Samara". And the reviews about him, to be honest, do not cause positive emotions. First of all, it concerns the impossibility of repair. The panel broke - buy a new one, and pay at least 8 thousand rubles. But for what such money, if it looks something it is not quite modern.
Tuning options
For those who want to bring novelty to the interior of the cabin, there are special offers in the form of electronic panels such as Gamma GF 825, GF 826, GF 610 SL, FLASH-I, etc. They look great and install without problems.
If you decide to carry out such tuning of the instrument panel, the Chevrolet Niva will immediately change for the better. But you will have to pay for it from 9 to 20 thousand rubles. But for this money you will get extra:
- multifunctional trip computer;
- digital and analog vehicle speed indicators;
- LED pilot lamps with dual alarm;
- indication of on-board network voltage;
- Autolight system;
- integrated diagnostic tester of electronic engine management system;
- the ability to select and adjust the backlight (color, brightness).
Well, if you can't afford to spend that kind of money, you can modernize the panel with special tuning kits. They include overlays for instruments and indicators (different colors) and lighting elements. Such sets cost 500-800 rubles.
