Starting from 2010, great changes began at the Gorky Automobile Plant. The range of cars of the GAZelle and Sobol families has undergone a major modernization and refinement. And if outwardly the new cars have practically not changed, then in the technical part it is quite the opposite (what is the use of the new American Cummins engine worth!). In today's article, we will consider such a modification of GAZ as the all-wheel drive Sobol, developed in 2011.

The design of the car has not changed much. Now the all-wheel drive "Sobol" is manufactured according to the same scheme as its mono-drive counterparts of 2003 of release. The only distinguishing feature is the wheels and ground clearance. Thanks to the use of all-wheel drive, ground clearance has increased significantly, respectively, and patency too.

Now the all-wheel drive Sobol has a new, more accurate torpedo architecture and a modern instrument panel with two large speedometer and tachometer scales. By the way, the latter was developed specifically for the order by the well-known company EDAG, which at one time made instrument panels for German Mercedes. Finally, a normal finish appeared in the cabin! Plastic, which used to constantly creak and rattle (and even on new cars), has now become pleasant to the touch and does not make extraneous sounds at all. Soundproofing was also improved, which was simply absent in the early Sobol models.
Duct deflectors no longer fall off when adjusted. With the new design of the torpedo, the ventilation system was also redesigned, due to which the performance of the stove increased significantly. As for passengers, the all-wheel drive Sobol is able to comfortably accommodate up to 6 people in several rows of seats, which makes it possible to drive without having category “D” rights. A 10-seater extended version is also produced at the Gorky plant.

Under the hood of the minivan is an American Cummins turbodiesel engine, which is also used in GAZelle Business vehicles. With its working volume of 2.8 liters, it produces up to 120 horsepower. The help of American colleagues made it possible to reducetotal fuel consumption up to 10.5 liters in mixed mode. But with the dynamics of Sobol, not everything is so smooth. A jerk from zero to “hundreds” is estimated at 25 seconds, while the maximum speed is 120 kilometers per hour. Paired with the engine is a 5-speed manual gearbox.

It is worth noting that the use of all-wheel drive has significantly increased the cost of production of Sobol. The minimum price at which it is sold in Russia is 701 thousand rubles (only 300 thousand less than the price of the new Ford Transit). Few are ready to sacrifice such an amount just for the sake of cross-country ability, so it never went into mass production.
