MZKT-79221 is a wheeled chassis that has increased power and load capacity. It works on 16 wheels. And the power of the power unit installed on it reaches 800 horsepower. The chassis is used for transportation of especially large cargoes. It is the base for the transportation of the Topol-M mobile missile system. At present, it can even transport nuclear weapons.
Historical facts
The prototype MZKT-79221 chassis was assembled in 1992. Its development was carried out on the basis of the MAZ-7922 car, which by that time had managed to prove itself from the best side. The chassis was produced by the Minsk Wheel Tractor Plant.
The developers of the Topol-M mobile missile system faced such a problem as transporting their offspring. The platform that did this work before was no longer suitable. Therefore, the developers had to look for an enterprise that could manufacture the necessary vehicle. Unfortunately, among domestic enterprises suchnot found. Therefore, an agreement was concluded for the creation of the chassis with the Minsk plant.
Over the next few years, development continued. The model entered mass production only in 2000.
Vehicle assignment
A special wheeled chassis is used to transport bulky goods. It can be rocket launchers, oil drilling rigs. Even heavy-duty cranes can be mounted on the base of the chassis.
The main purpose is to perform the functions of military defense. In addition, it can be used for civilian purposes. For this, a special modification with an index of 100 has been developed. This version of the chassis is capable of accelerating up to 45 kilometers per hour.
Truck features
Military wheeled vehicles are equipped with YaMZ-847 power units. They are capable of developing power up to 800 horsepower. Gross weight is 120 tons. Off-road, the tractor is capable of carrying 80 tons of cargo.
The MZKT-79221 tractor is huge. Its width is 3.4 meters. It is 22.7 meters long. Moves due to 16 wheels, tires in which with variable pressure. You can imagine their size if you find out that the height of each such product is almost 2 meters. It is very difficult to inflate such a wheel with air. Therefore, special pumps are installed that will inflate the tires in the event of a breakdown right on the go. Tire pressure is controlled by an integrated system. Of the 8 axes, 6 are controlled (except for the two central ones). This significantly reduced the turning radius. It is almost equal to this parameter, characteristic of a four-axle truck. To improve this indicator, an interesting wheel turning system is used. While the wheels mounted on the first axles turn in one direction, the wheels of the rear axles turn in the opposite direction.
All the bumps in the road are smoothed out by large diameter wheels, suspension and a flexible frame that can deform predictably. For the same purpose, the elements are attached to the chassis at three points.
The truck passed the acceptance test with a positive mark. Therefore, it was recommended for mass production.
Powertrain and gearbox
The MZKT-79221 tractor is equipped with a turbocharged diesel engine YaMZ-847, 10. A four-stroke engine with direct fuel injection. Cooling of the power unit of liquid type. The power it produces reaches 800 hp. With. The engine capacity is 25.8 liters.
When driving "to empty" the tractor consumes 240 liters. In a fully loaded state, the consumption increases to 300 liters. The fuel tank capacity is 825 liters. There is enough fuel to drive the tractor for 500 km without stopping.
Transmission automatic. But in automatic mode, the gears are switched only after the speed of the tractor is above 10 km / h. To develop maximum speed, it is also necessary to shift gears in manual mode. The operating interval of the checkpoint is divided into 4 ranges. Forward or backward movement is controlled by an additional button.
The cab is located in the front, slightly shifted to the left side. The salon is equipped with metal elements. There are no windows or air conditioning. Three people (one driver and two assistants) must drive the tractor. The salon is almost completely filled with various buttons and levers. Moreover, management training lasts a year. While driving, the driver must perform all actions "in advance".

Flaws
By its design, the MZKT-79221 tractor is an off-road vehicle, as it has several axles. Accordingly, it is designed specifically for driving on rough terrain. But at the same time, the tractor cannot move along a route that has not been checked. All wheels must touch the ground. If at least a few hang in the air, the entire structure will be overloaded. And the car is not designed for such overloads.
Among the shortcomings, one can also highlight the high fuel consumption. A powerful engine installed in a car consumes fuel with a vengeance.
Analogues and competitors
Serial production of the MZKT-79221 tractor began in 2000 after a series of tests. All this time, the car is produced in limited quantities, in small series. Over the past years, neither domestic nor foreign manufacturers of special equipment have been able to offer an analogue to this wheeled chassis. The technical characteristics of the tractor make it a unique vehicle. You can buy it, but it's not easy to do. Only modifications of the MZKT-79221-100 are on sale, which are intended for use in the civilian industry. You can order a model both from the manufacturer and from an ordinary buyer. Only in the latter case, the equipment will be used, not new.
